Will Duke Win Fewer Than 7 Football Games This Coming Season?

With action on the hardwood taking over the airwaves, college football will be (temporarily) put on the back burner. However, for those gridiron fans who want to get ahead of the game, FanDuel Sportsbook has gone live with 2024 college football win totals!

Out in the expanded ACC, the Duke Blue Devils are preparing for life after dual-threat quarterback Riley Leonard (who intends to join the Notre Dame Fighting Irish).

Not only are the Blue Devils bringing in a new signal-caller this year, but there has been a coaching change as well. Mike Elko is now leading the Texas A&M Aggies, which brings in Manny Diaz as Duke's 23rd head coach in program history.

Before spring ball gets up and running, let's have a look at Duke's 2024 win total at FanDuel Sportsbook while diving into both perspectives -- the over and the under.

Why Duke Could Win Over 6.5 Games (+108)

Quarterback Maalik Murphy has committed to transfer in for his sophomore campaign, leaving the Texas Longhorns for Duke.

Standing at 6-foot-5, Murphy has an ideal build for the position. Additionally, he makes for a tough tackle in open space as Murphy can impose physical will on smaller defenders at this level. Diaz's personal specialty is on the defensive side, so on offense, I'd imagine there will be emphasis on the ground game.

With that being said, Murphy will have the luxury of working with Duke receiver Jordan Moore. With fellow Blue Devils wideout Jalon Calhoun declaring for the 2024 NFL Draft, Moore will be Murphy's best option in the passing game. In 2023, Moore paced the Dukies in all major receiving categories, producing a clip of 13.5 yards per reception with eight touchdowns. Moore also boasts an imposing frame, towering over most defensive backs at a height of 6-foot-2.

Going against a win total of 6.5 games, the Blue Devils have a favorable opportunity to commence the season with three consecutive victories. To start, they'll will face the Elon Phoenix (FCS), Northwestern Wildcats and Connecticut Huskies. In 2023, Duke shellacked the latter two programs by a combined score of 79-21.

The Dukies will travel to the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders for their fourth contest of 2024. MTSU was 4-8 a year ago and will likely have a tough time matching up with the Blue Devils. Seemingly, there is a fair chance that Duke is 4-0 heading into their rivalry bid with the North Carolina Tar Heels, which will take place in Durham.

A year ago, the Blue Devils were ranked within the top-70 FBS schools on both offense and defense. There will likely be some offensive drop off going forward with Leonard leaving town, but Coach Diaz should be able to help ensure the defense stays stout. Keep in mind -- Duke allowed just 19.0 PPG in 2023.

Diaz served as the Penn State Nittany Lions' defensive coordinator in the most recent campaign, holding opponents to a blistering 13.5 PPG (third in Division I). Overall, Diaz inherits a strong group to work with, but his specialty resides with the linebacking corps.

Duke will be returning last year's leading tackler in Tre Freeman. The Durham native is a fierce linebacker, consistently setting the tone on that side of the football. On the perimeter, cornerback Chandler Rivers -- who is returning for his third season at Duke -- brings sticky cover skills. Up front, edge rusher Wesley Williams is Duke's most talented defensive lineman.

The defense of the Devils should keep them in most games. Will the offense be able to generate enough points to get to seven wins?

Why Duke Could Win Under 6.5 Games (-132)

Without a doubt, Diaz is a quality college football coach, but when a coach takes over a new program, there can be some challenges in Year 1. Still, Diaz does have previous head-coaching experience within the ACC from his time at the Miami (FL) Hurricanes (2019-2021). Through that span, he compiled a 21-15 overall record for the U. However, he won only six games in his most recent season as 'Canes head coach.

As alluded to, incoming quarterback Murphy has sky-high potential. Be that as it may, it is still difficult to tell how he will progress as a passer. In spot work for Texas, Murphy attempted 71 passes at a pedestrian completion clip of 56.3%. From there, his 3-to-3 TD-to-INT ratio as a freshman presents room for improvement.

There's always the off chance Murphy elects to flip his commitment. These days, the transfer portal is as dynamic as ever. Considering there is still a month or two until spring-ball activities commence, myriad scenarios could play out.

Even if it's Murphy taking the snaps, Duke will see their share of stiff competition. The Blue Devils' strength of schedule increases exponentially starting when they host the Florida State Seminoles on October 18th. From there, they'll play the Southern Methodist Mustangs, Miami and North Carolina State Wolfpack; don't be surprised if the Dukies go winless over that four-game stretch.

There are qualities to like about the Devils in 2024, but the offense is looking to replace their QB and top three rushers from a year ago. Not only is Leonard headed to South Bend -- tailbacks Jordan Waters and Jaquez Moore are transferring out, too.

In short, there's a reason the under is the -132 favorite. This has the looks of a rebuilding year in Durham.
