Super Bowl Odds Update: 49ers Present Golden Standard

After the Cincinnati Bengals' road upset against the Jacksonville Jaguars in overtime, we can officially close the book on Week 13.

The recent slate offered a contentious batch of games. As fans and bettors, most had eyes on the NFC championship rematch, wherein the San Francisco 49ers grounded the Philadelphia Eagles. From there, the Kansas City Chiefs were outplayed in primetime by the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.

As we embark into NFL Week 14, there are several pivotal contests on the docket. Still, before Thursday Night Football restarts the action, let's survey the list of recent movers in the Super Bowl LVIII betting market -- FanDuel Sportsbook has a new favorite here for the third consecutive week.

Notable Jumps

San Francisco 49ers

FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +320
Last week: +430

As alluded to, the 49ers have ascended to the top spot on FanDuel Sportsbook's Super Bowl oddsboard after dropping 42 in Philly. At 9-3 straight up (SU), the recent victory gives San Francisco a 3-0 record versus the NFC East this season, scoring a whopping 114 points in that split (against the Eagles, Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants) compared to just 41 points surrendered.

At numberFire, the Niners (15.21 nERD) are currently viewed as the second-best team in the NFL. When you ponder over their roster on both sides of the football, it is tough to downplay San Francisco. On defense, Fred Warner and Nick Bosa are certified All-Pros while Javon Hargrave and Chase Young have been needed additions. On O, quarterback Brock Purdy (75.6 QBR) has utilized his "big five" skill players masterfully. At FanDuel, Purdy is a joint favorite to win the upcoming MVP.

With physical tone setters like Trent Williams, Deebo Samuel, Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle, it is tough to imagine anyone getting in San Francisco's way other than themselves. Looking at the remaining regular season schedule, they face only one more contender: the Baltimore Ravens on Christmas night. Still, as the two-seed, the 49ers will be rooting for Dallas against Philadelphia this weekend on Sunday Night Football.

Green Bay Packers

FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +7500
Last week: +10000

Displaying mixed results, Green Bay has compiled both a four-game losing streak and a three-game winning streak in 2023. Fortunately for the Packers, their three-game heater is currently ongoing, having just bested the reigning champion Chiefs under the lights. At 6-6 SU, G.B. would be the final team in the NFC playoffs if the campaign ended today.

The Pack's decision to move on from Aaron Rodgers to young gun Jordan Love is beginning to appear justified. Notably, Rodgers played only one series this year for the New York Jets, while Love is top-five in touchdowns (22). Additionally, Green Bay's defense has continually improved -- they are allowing only 20.3 PPG (ninth) in 2023.

Going forward, it might tough for the Packers to overcome the Detroit Lions for the NFC North title, but Green Bay's regular season schedule closes out favorably. In terms of their upcoming competition, the remaining five games are against teams that have combined for a 20-40 overall record.

If you're wondering, numberFire's playoff projections give the Pack a 75.3% chance to make the playoffs. For a Super Bowl run, sometimes that is all you need.

Steep Drops

Pittsburgh Steelers

FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +9500
Last week: +7000

I respect the greatness of head coach Mike Tomlin, but there is an argument to be made that the 2023-24 Pittsburgh Steelers are the worst 7-5 team of the modern era. Under second-year quarterback Kenny Pickett, the offense has been largely ineffective (scoring just 16.0 PPG). Weirdly enough, Pittsburgh has yet to lose consecutive games this season.

If history has taught us anything, the Steelers almost always warrant respect on defense. For 2023, they are again led by All-Pros T.J. Watt (13 sacks/3 FF) and Minkah Fitzpatrick. Being that the signal-caller Pickett (ankle) will miss time after undergoing tightrope surgery, the defense will now be called upon to do more than ever.

As a former second-overall draft pick, veteran quarterback Mitchell Trubisky will attempt to right the ship in Steel City. In last week's loss to the Arizona Cardinals, Trubisky completed 7 of 10 passes for 70 yards while filling in. Can he keep Pittsburgh afloat through a five-game stretch that features only two games against sides better than .500?

New Orleans Saints

FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +14000
Last week: +7500

The "Crescent City" is an otherworldly type of place, and it certainly has been a strange season for the New Orleans Saints. At 5-7 overall, Who Dat has produced several questionable performances, including last Sunday's home loss to the Lions. In that bid, quarterback Derek Carr was cold, then hot, then injured, as Detroit defender Bruce Irvin pummeled the signal-caller into concussion protocol. Carr was also listed to have incurred shoulder and back injuries on the play.

New Orleans will likely have their hand forced into starting Jameis Winston at quarterback for the interim. Of course, as a backup, you could do much worse than Winston -- the 2013 Heisman Trophy winner has attempted nearly 2,900 passes at the NFL level. Additionally, Winston has accumulated 141 passing touchdowns in his career.

The Saints will also stay on brand by sprinkling in the hyper-dynamic Taysom Hill. Still, despite any offensive woes, New Orleans' defense has declined in recent weeks. Over Who Dat's current three-game losing streak, the Saints have given up 28.0 PPG, which is far worse than their yearly clip of 21.3 PPG allowed. Simply, that is too high for a unit that boasts All-Pros Cam Jordan, Tyrann Mathieu and Demario Davis.
