Cardinals Analysis

Notably, the Cardinals finished 71-91 last year, which was dead last amongst the NL Central. Let the record reflect: it was also St. Louis' least number of wins in a season since 1995. Simply, there is expansive room for improvement in "Gateway City" -- a town with lofty baseball standards.

The Redbirds have not hoisted the Commissioner's Trophy since 2011. However, their last World Series appearance came in 2013. Either way, St. Louis has been waiting quite a while for championship No. 12. The Cards are returning substantial talent for the coming campaign; is this the year they return to the Fall Classic?

Typically considered top dog in the NL Central, St. Louis will attempt to get back to their winning ways in 2024. The Cardinals will remain strong on the corners behind infielders Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt. Arenado remains one of the top players at his spot while Goldschmidt produced 25 homers and 80 RBI (featuring a hard-hit rate of 50.7%) in a down year.

The Cards' team OPS of .742 was tied for 13th in the Majors last year, which is respectable, but the pitching in St. Louis must improve going forward. The Cardinals posted a 4.79 collective ERA in 2023 (fourth-worst in the National League).

On the hill, St. Louis no longer has the leadership of hurler Adam Wainwright; "Uncle Charlie" recently retired after an illustrious 18-year career with the Redbirds. That leaves Miles Mikolas as the Cardinals' most consistent starter. Mikolas was the only Cards pitcher to start more than 30 games, but he also posted a mediocre 4.81 SIERA.

Transparently, the supporting cast of catcher Willson Contreras, outfielder Lars Nootbaar and the newly acquired Brandon Crawford will be pivotal for St. Louis. All of those players have championship pedigree, which could loom large in any potential postseason run.

Within the NL Central, the Cards will see fierce competition from the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds. Chicago recently re-signed former NL MVP Cody Bellinger. For Cincy, they have myriad stars under the age of 24.

At FanDuel Sportsbook, the Cardinals are listed with 32-to-1 odds in the World Series market. In 2024, can STL end their dozen-year title drought?
