NRFI Bets to Target on Tuesday 6/18/24

The MLB season is an annual marathon that gives us months of daily betting markets to consider.

While traditional player props like home runs and strikeouts remain popular options, one market that's gained steam is betting whether or not no runs will be scored in the first inning -- aka a No Run First Inning (NRFI) bet.

On FanDuel Sportsbook's MLB odds, we can find NRFI odds listed as 1st Inning Over/Under 0.5 Runs odds under each MLB game.

Where can we find value in this unique prop market today?

Best NRFI Prop Bets

Milwaukee Brewers at Los Angeles Angels

Over 1st Inning 0.5 Runs (-113)

We have an ideal pitcher matchup to target for a YRFI on Tuesday with Tobias Myers and Griffin Canning squaring off. Myers is slated to make his ninth start of the year for the Milwaukee Brewers, producing a 4-4 NRFI record up to this point.

Across his first eight outings, Myers is logging a 4.62 xFIP, 1.38 WHIP, and a massive 15.2% walk rate in the first inning. In the last 14 days, the Los Angeles Angels have registered the fifth-highest walk rate (10.1%) and the sixth-most stolen bases (12).

On the other hand, Canning has also been one of the worst pitchers in the first inning, notching a forgettable 5.34 xFIP, 2.07 WHIP, and .509 wOBA in the opening frame through 14 starts. Given his inability to begin games on a high note, Canning has tallied a dismal 6-8 NRFI record in 2024.

Canning has given up the most homers (6) in the first inning among all pitchers. In addition, Canning owns just a 14.3% strikeout rate and 7.1% walk rate in the opening frame of contests.

The first four hitters in Milwaukee's projected lineup (Brice Turang, William Contreras, Christian Yelich, and Willy Adames) all boast a wOBA of .349 or better versus right-handed pitching. Myers and Canning have been dreadful to begin their outings thus far, making this an ideal spot for a YRFI.

Kansas City Royals at Oakland Athletics

Under 1st Inning 0.5 Runs (-120)

It's also worth taking a look at the NRFI market in a game involving the Oakland Athletics -- who have the worst wOBA (.240), second-worst wRC+ (57), fifth-worst ISO (.112), and second-highest strikeout rate (30.2%) in the first inning. The next starting pitcher that gets to face the Athletics is Alec Marsh of the Kansas City Royals.

Marsh is expected to make his 13th start of the campaign as he's earned a 9-3 NRFI record entering Tuesday's positive matchup. Starting games strong has been one of Marsh's calling cards this season, recording a 2.86 xFIP, 0.92 WHIP, 2.2% walk rate, and 30.4% strikeout rate in the opening inning.

Besides Oakland's woes in the first frame, they are tallying the third-worst wOBA (.261), third-worst wRC+ (71), third-worst ISO (.107), and second-highest strikeout rate (27.4%) in the last 14 days. Marsh should have no issues getting three outs at a pitcher-friendly venue versus a below-average Athletics squad.

Hogan Harris is set to make his fourth start for Oakland since joining the rotation, and he's posted a 2-1 NRFI record with two straight starts of allowing zero earned runs in the first inning. Although it's a very small sample size of three starts, Harris owns a formidable 3.52 xFIP, 0.67 WHIP, and 27.3% strikeout rate in the first inning.

What has helped Harris tremendously is the fact he's yet to issue a walk in the opening frame. Even though the Royals have the seventh-most runs (41) in the first inning, they have the 13th-worst wRC+ (95) in the initial frame and have gone eight straight games without scoring a run to begin a contest.
