NHL Daily Fantasy Picks and Helper: Tuesday 3/5/24

NHL DFS is similar to MLB in terms of how you build lineups, how you view stacking, and how to value players.

Two main points to always focus on in NHL DFS are what lines the players are on and making sure the goalies you are rostering are confirmed as the starters.

Two of the best resources for that are LeftWingLock.com and DailyFaceOff.com. That is where you can find updated forward and power-play lines for each team, along with which goalies are confirmed as the starters.

Using our projections -- which are powered by numberFire -- as a guide, let's take a look at today's slate to find a goalie, some stacks, and value plays for your NHL DFS lineups on FanDuel.

NHL DFS Picks

Goalie to Target

Ilya Sorokin, New York Islanders ($7,700)

Thanks to a nine-game slate today, there are plenty of goalies to target. But the top option for DFS lineups is looking like Ilya Sorokin.

Despite what has unquestionably been a tough season for Sorokin and the New York Islanders, the goaltender has remained solid and strong night in and night out. The dominance that he showed last year hasn't been there as shown by Sorokin's inflated 3.06 goals against average (GAA).

However, his impressive .910 save percentage (SV%) does back up his overall play for an Islanders team that is allowing 33.28 shots against per 60 minutes (SA/60), the second-most in the NHL. Sorokin has racked up three straight victories with the Islanders trying to make a push in this final month or so of the season.

This should work out against a St. Louis Blues lineup that doesn't score all too much. The Blues are averaging 28.53 shots for per 60 minutes (SF/60) and just 2.89 expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60), which has turned into 2.81 goals for per 60 minutes overall. They've had a bad offensive unit all season long despite their record, and as a result, Sorokin should be able to put together a strong night.

Our projections expect Sorokin to finish with 22.1 FanDuel points in the tilt.

Stacks

Dallas Stars

A great Dallas Stars offense facing off with a poor San Jose Sharks squad? Yeah, stack the Stars without hesitation tonight.

The Stars are a top offensive unit in nearly every category. Dallas ranks top-10 in Corsi for per 60 minutes (62.87 CF/60) and GF/60 (3.47), and it's just outside the top 10 in xGF/60 (3.19).

On the flip side, the Sharks are at the bottom in every category possible. San Jose has the worst Corsi against per 60 minutes (CA/60) in the NHL at 71.48, leading to 35.05 SA/60. As a result of all these awful numbers, they're letting up a league-worst 3.79 GA/60.

Everything points to the Stars having a gigantic night, as numberFire's model is projecting them to finish with 3.70 goals.

Stacking this lineup should go through the top line, which is star-studded. Jason Robertson ($7,400), Joe Pavelski ($6,900), and Roope Hintz ($6,800) make up the first line and the top power-play unit -- they're the three you want in your DFS lineups.

Pittsburgh Penguins

The future of the Pittsburgh Penguins might be a bit murky, but they still have an offense that can take advantage of a great matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Pittsburgh has been an elite offense when you dive into the advanced stats. While they're scoring only 2.88 GF/60, everything else is on their side. The Penguins are 6th with a 64.49 CF/60, 5th with 32.45 SF/60, and 3rd with 3.4 xGF/60 -- all signs of what should be a big night for them.

I feel like I've written about how bad the Blue Jackets are countless times, but let's do it one more time. Columbus has a 65.59 CA/60 and allows 3.59 GA/60 -- both ranking bottom-three in the NHL. That's all you need to know that the Penguins can make them pay.

numberFire's heat map has the Penguins set with a 3.83 implied total tonight, the third-best on the slate.

This Penguins stack should always be led off by Sidney Crosby ($8,700). With Jake Guentzel injured, Valterri Puustinen ($3,700) will be the fellow top-line option you want to consider with Crosby, as he's also on the top power-play line, as well. Erik Karlsson ($6,400) is a good choice on the backend as per usual.

Value Skaters

Pavel Zacha, C, Boston Bruins ($5,400)

Pavel Zacha has been huge for the Boston Bruins this year, and it should continue tonight.

After fighting off injury, Zacha returned in a big way last night when he notched two goals against the Toronto Maple Leafs. His overall output on the campaign includes 14 goals, 24 assists, and 38 points. His role with the team includes first-line minutes (18:05) -- the most in his career.

It always works out when you're paired off with David Pastrnak, and their combination has shown to be the strongest on the Black and Gold. He plays power-play minutes and penalty kill minutes, giving him all the chances to get things done against the Edmonton Oilers.

Zacha should be able to shine for a second straight night, as our projections expect him to put up 13.3 FanDuel points.

Matias Maccelli, W, Arizona Coyotes ($4,500)

Matias Maccelli has had an underrated campaign, and he's one of the top values of the night.

Maccelli has been a bright spot for the Arizona Coyotes. The winger has recorded 11 goals and 33 assists, good for 44 points through 61 games. To take it another step further, he's recorded a point in six straight games, totaling eight overall in the stretch. Getting Maccelli into lineups at the right time is essential and facing a bad Chicago Blackhawks team makes it all the better.

He's also played over 20 minutes in 3 of his last 4 games, giving him the usage that makes him that much more valuable for DFS lineups.

Our projections expect Maccelli to finish with 12.2 FanDuel points.
