NHL Betting Picks for Friday 5/10/24: Examining the Total for Game 3 of Panthers-Bruins

It's a Friday night doubleheader from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, leaving us with plenty to look forward to tonight.

Whether it's moneylines or total goals, there are plenty of ways to bet on the NHL action all season. It's a long 82-game campaign, meaning that the best selections of each night can be very different based on backup goalies coming into play, injuries that add up, and if teams are due for positive or negative swings.

Let's dive into the best bets for tonight.

NHL Best Bets

Florida Panthers at Boston Bruins

Under 5.5 Goals (-114)

The Florida Panthers and Boston Bruins are tied 1-1 in a heated series, making tonight's Game 3 even more exciting.

Game 1 saw the Bruins walk away with a 5-1 victory followed by a Game 2 that had the Panthers dominating their way to a 6-1 win. As the series heads back to Boston, I feel as though the one-sided scoring will be going away with things tightening up between the two squads.

It's been a very one-sided series if you want to look at offensive output beyond goals. The Panthers have really been the ones to control the pace early in games, which is why the return to Boston for the Bruins has to (hopefully) be where that changes. When the Bruins win their games, it's because they're keeping the opposition off the scoresheet.

Jeremy Swayman shouldn't and won't receive the blame for that one-sided loss on Wednesday -- which is why he's starting once again tonight. The Bruins' goalie had only allowed two goals or less in his previous seven starts in the playoffs this year, so expect him to return to form tonight. Sergei Bobrovsky didn't have to face much last game or in these series for that matter; Florida is only averaging 22.00 shots against per 60 minutes (SA/60) in the first two games. Based on his history, he should be able to keep the Bruins in check on such low shot volume.

While the Panthers do have the best Corsi per 60 minutes (CF/60) in the second round among NHL teams (80.00), the return of Andrew Peeke will be a big lift to the Bruins defensively.

This game is going to be a war if the end of Game 2 was a sign of things to come. I like the series to slow down in the box score tonight.

Edmonton Oilers at Vancouver Canucks

Oilers ML (-130)

After a complete collapse, the Edmonton Oilers are looking to tie up their series with the Vancouver Canucks in Game 2.

Edmonton had a 4-1 lead at the halfway point of Game 1, looking as though they had outclassed the Canucks at home to get them a 1-0 series lead. Well, plans changed as the Canucks stormed back, scoring four goals to steal a 5-4 win on their home ice. It was similar to the Dallas Stars' brutal loss in Game 1 of their series with the Colorado Avalanche, which is why I'm taking the Oilers to redeem themselves in tonight's contest.

Throughout the playoffs thus far, the Oilers have simply been better than the Canucks. In their six games, Edmonton is averaging 3.07 expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60) and 4.31 goals for per 60 minutes (GF/60). Comparably, the Canucks haven't been close in either respect -- which made Game 1 so surprising.

Vancouver is only averaged 2.45 xGF/60, ranking as the lowest of all remaining teams in the playoffs. They are holding opponents to 2.51 expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60), which is slightly better than Edmonton's mark of 2.67.

The Oilers have to team to get this done and head back to Edmonton tied 1-1.
