NHL Betting Picks for Friday 3/1/24: Senators Aim to Further Coyotes' Losing Skid

A three-game slate is set to close out the work week in the NHL, and there are some good bets to consider as a result.

Whether it's moneylines or total goals, there are plenty of ways to bet on the NHL action all season. It's a long 82-game campaign, meaning that the best selections of each night can be very different based on backup goalies coming into play, injuries that add up, and if teams are due for positive or negative swings.

Let's dive into the best bets for tonight.

NHL Best Bets

Arizona Coyotes at Ottawa Senators

Senators ML (-182)

Betting against a team that is in the midst of a 14-game losing streak and playing on a back-to-back? Don't mind if I do. The Arizona Coyotes don't have any answers right now, and it's the reason to bet on the Ottawa Senators to win tonight.

The Senators aren't on their way to the postseason -- as shown by their last place record of 25-29-3 -- but they've shown positive signs in what has been a tough Atlantic Division. That record is notably better than every other division's bottom team, so I have more belief in them right now.

One thing that the Senators do well is create opportunities for themselves and put the puck in the net. They have a 62.46 Corsi for per 60 minutes (CF/60), ranking 12th in the NHL. Scoring-wise, the Senators rank 11th with 3.27 goals for per 60 minutes (GF/60) and 3.19 expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60).

Where their woes come in is keeping the puck out of their own net, but that shouldn't be as much of an issue against the Coyotes, who haven't had good goal-scoring numbers. The Senators allow a bottom-three 3.53 goals against per 60 minutes (GA/60) but are better than that, as they allow 2.92 expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60), the 8th-best mark in the league.

The Coyotes don't score, as shown by their 2.87 xGF/60 and an overall 2.82 GF/60. Defensively, they're letting up 3.18 xGA/60, helping a Senators team out that needs it to get this victory.

Bet on Ottawa tonight to make it 15 games in a row for the Coyotes.

New Jersey Devils at Anaheim Ducks

Devils -1.5 (-105)

Coming off a 7-2 win against the San Jose Sharks, the New Jersey Devils are in a great spot to show their offensive skillset against another bad team in the Anaheim Ducks.

New Jersey has a top offensive unit in the NHL, led by Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier. Their offense is totaling a sixth-ranked CF/60 (64.19) and seventh-ranked GF/60 (3.33), and it's tied for fourth with a 3.38 xGF/60.

Everything about their offense is elite, and that should play big against Anaheim. The Ducks are allowing 3.52 GA/60 and rank as the second-worst team in the NHL with their 3.48 xGA/60.

The only hold-up would be the Devils' struggles to keep the puck out of their own goal. On average, New Jersey is watching opponents score at a 3.42 GA/60 rate. Their expected rate against is only a bit better, coming in at 3.12 xGA/60.

The good news for the Devils is that the Ducks have been bad at scoring for so much of this season.

Anaheim has the third-worst xGF/60 at 2.68 but is actually scoring even less at 2.63 GF/60. The inability to score by Anaheim is the major reason to back the Devils tonight, as they should be able to take care of business with their elite scoring prowess.

I'm taking Devils -1.5 tonight with just three games to pick from on the slate. They should be able to make easy work of the Ducks, who are playing in a back-to-back. That gives New Jersey yet another edge.
