Rays' Zach Eflin (lower back) lands on 15-day IL
The Tampa Bay Rays place starting pitcher Zach Eflin (lower back) on the 15-day IL ahead of Monday's game against the Boston Red Sox.
What It Means
Eflin is reportedly dealing with inflammation in his lower back and will take some time off to recover with a stint on the injured list. In a corresponding move, the Rays elevated infielder Brandon Lowe (oblique) from the IL for a start at second base in this afternoon's game.
The veteran pitcher has been having an up-and-down season and has given up at least 3 earned runs in 4 of his last 5 outings. His 4.12 ERA is not ideal, but he's maintaining a decent 1.17 WHIP and has thrown just 4 walks (compared to 44 strikeouts) this year. Hopefully he avoids a lengthy stay on the IL and is able to return to form sooner rather than later.
