Braves vs. Nationals Betting Odds: Spread, Total, and Moneyline

  • Time: 6:45 p.m. ET
  • Spread: Braves -1.5 (+112)
  • Total: 8.5
  • Moneyline:
    • Braves: -152
    • Nationals: +128

Best Bet

Nationals Under 3.5 Runs (+100)

Today's Free Game of the Day features a matchup between the Washington Nationals (27-34) and Atlanta Braves (34-25).

Washington crossed home plate just once in last night's loss to the New York Mets and could be in for a similar fate tonight.

Reynaldo Lopez will be on the bump for the Braves. At the top of the season, Lopez secured a spot in Atlanta's starting rotation and has been shining ever since.

Through 10 starts, he sports a 1.73 ERA (second-best in MLB; minimum 55 IP), 3.72 xERA, 3.71 xFIP, 3.86 SIERA, and 1.08 WHIP. He's cushioned that with a 24.3% K% and has let only two balls fly over the fence, leaving him with an astounding 0.31 HR/9 mark (third-best).

The Nationals could play into his hand. Coming into the night, the team is producing a .232 BA (18th), .362 SLG (26th), .298 wOBA (23rd), and 92 wRC+ (24th) versus right-handed pitchers.

They're not generating a whole ton of power, struggling with a .129 ISO (25th), 28.7% hard-hit rate (29th), and 36.1% fly-ball rate (22nd). Since Washington is averaging just 0.79 home runs per game (27th) and going back to Lopez's ability to keep things within the park, there seems to be low risk for a dinger here, which is super helpful when targeting the under.

Past Lopez, Atlanta's bullpen enters with a 3.39 ERA (6th), 3.89 xFIP (12th), and 3.55 SIERA (12th). Joe Jimenez (2.74 ERA and 1.63 xERA) and Raisel Iglesias (2.42 ERA and 2.82 xERA) should both be readily available after a few days off from the mound.

The Braves have surrendered less than 3.5 runs in 7 out of 10 games where Lopez started. Washington has recorded under 3.5 runs in 55.7% of their games, so I'm pleased to back +100 odds.

Best Prop

Reynaldo Lopez 6+ Strikeouts (+142)

Lopez is averaging 5.5 strikeouts per start and has exceeded 5.5 Ks in 5 out of 10 games.

With +142 odds (41.3% probability) available to side with a prop that has shaken out a 50.0% rate, I'm willing to back Lopez.

Washington's 21.6% K% (13th-lowest) against righties isn't overly exciting. However, Joey Gallo (41.0% K% vs. R), Nick Senzel (26.2% K%), Lane Thomas (25.8% K%), and Jesse Winker (21.1% K%) will all be in the Nationals' lineup tonight.

Gallo owns the fourth-highest strikeout rate in the league in this split, so he could be an easy K for Lopez. We should see these two face each other at least a pair of times. Lopez also has a slightly higher strikeout rate (24.7% K%) on the road and has shown superior overall numbers in night games.
