MLB SGP Bets for Friday 7/12/24

Texas Rangers at Houston Astros

Andrew Heaney Under 4.5 Strikeouts (+116)
Yainer Diaz to Record an RBI (+125)

Combined Odds: +324

Andrew Heaney has improved in the strikeout department in recent starts, tallying five-plus Ks in five of his last seven outings for the Texas Rangers. The experienced southpaw is now in the 87th percentile in chase rate (32.8%), 67th percentile in whiff rate (27.4%), and 60th percentile in strikeout rate (23.8%) following a shaky start to the season.

Despite Heaney's recent success on the bump, he'll face a familiar foe on Friday with the Houston Astros hosting the Rangers. Houston has the lowest strikeout rate (17.0%) versus left-handed pitching in 2024, and the current roster has 165 career plate appearances -- with just a 13.3% strikeout rate -- against Heaney.

Even with Heaney generating more swings and misses, he's still giving up decent numbers to right-handed hitters. Against right-handed bats, Heaney is permitting a .303 wOBA and 1.34 HR/9 with 11 of his 12 homers given up thus far coming against righties.

With those splits in mind, Yainer Diaz is a member of the Astros who could have a noteworthy performance. Diaz owns a .396 wOBA or better versus Heaney's two primary pitches (four-seam fastball and slider) against righties, and he's been hitting out of the cleanup spot when facing left-handed pitching.

Diaz is carrying +460 odds to hit a home run in Friday's AL West showdown.

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals

Sonny Gray to Record 6+ Strikeouts (-170)
Alec Burleson to Record an RBI (+145)
St. Louis Cardinals Alternate Total Runs: Over 2.5 (-440)

Combined Odds: +308

Sonny Gray has been allowing more runs than he was earlier in the season, but he's still racking up Ks at a decent clip. Aside from logging six-plus strikeouts in five of his last seven outings for the St. Louis Cardinals, Gray ranks in the 65th percentile in chase rate (29.8%), 69th percentile in whiff rate (27.9%), and 93rd percentile in strikeout rate (31.1%).

Friday's matchup against the Chicago Cubs is also ideal for Gray -- especially with Cody Bellinger recently being placed on the injured list. Chicago has six players in their projected lineup with a 24.9% strikeout rate versus right-handed pitching while the Cubs have the fifth-highest strikeout rate (24.7%) when facing right-handed pitchers in the last 30 days.

Kyle Hendricks is on the mound for the Cubs, and he's giving up a .386 wOBA, 1.55 WHIP, and 2.56 HR/9 to left-handed hitters. Taking that into consideration, Alec Burleson is a batter on the Cardinals who could do damage at the plate.

Burleson is swinging a hot bat right now with at least one hit in 9 of his last 10 contests, and he's tallied at least one RBI in three consecutive appearances. Additionally, Burleson is posting a .226 ISO or better and a .450 wOBA or better versus Hendricks' two primary pitches (sinker and changeup) against lefties.

With two homers and six RBIs in his last three games, Burleson is being given +540 odds to hit a home run.

To finish out this SGP, we'll back the Cardinals to plate three-plus runs. Hendricks has surrendered a combined 12 earned runs in his last four starts while St. Louis has scored three-plus runs in nine straight contests.

Atlanta Braves at San Diego Padres

Jarred Kelenic to Record 2+ Total Bases (+105)
Marcell Ozuna to Record an RBI (+125)

Combined Odds: +331

At the moment, it appears that Randy Vasquez will be making his 13th start for the San Diego Padres on Friday. Vasquez is sitting in the 2nd percentile in xERA (6.32), 1st percentile in xBA (.326), 6th percentile in strikeout rate (14.8%), 30th percentile in barrel rate (8.9%), and 35th percentile in hard-hit rate (40.6%).

Up to this point, Vasquez is allowing a .491 wOBA, 2.48 WHIP, 2.57 HR/9, and just a 8.1% strikeout rate to lefties, compared to a .315 wOBA, 1.11 WHIP, 1.22 HR/9, and 20.0% strikeout rate to righties. Given those splits, Jarred Kelenic should feast out of the leadoff spot for the Atlanta Braves.

Kelenic has a formidable .339 wOBA, 119 wRC+, and .191 ISO against right-handed pitching, and he's tallied two-plus bases in three of his last six contests. Even though Vasquez has worse metrics against left-handed bats, Marcell Ozuna can still do damage as a right-handed hitter.

Whether it be out of the No. 3 or No. 5 spot in the lineup, Ozuna has notched at least one RBI in four of his last seven games, totaling eight RBIs in that span. Although it's a small sample size, Ozuna has gone 3-for-4 with two doubles and a homer -- and zero strikeouts -- in five career plate appearances versus Vasquez.

Ahead of Friday's clash between the Padres and Braves, Kelenic has +480 odds to hit a home run while Ozuna has +310 odds in the same market.
