Twins Analysis
The 2023 campaign was a positive one for the Twins despite falling to the Houston Astros in four games in the ALDS. Minnesota posted an 87-75 record and swept Toronto in the American League Wild Card Series in two games by a combined score of 5-1.
The Twins are a team that is predicated on having a dominant pitching rotation and bullpen. During the 2023 season, Minnesota's pitchers combined for the league lead in skill interactive earned run average (SIERA; 3.77) and strikeout rate (25.9%) while also having the fourth-best WHIP (1.20).
Pablo Lopez -- who registered career-best marks in innings pitched (194.0) and strikeouts (234) in 2023 -- is tied for the third-shortest AL Cy Young odds (+1000) entering this season. As for the bullpen, Jhoan Duran leads the way after logging 27 saves and a 32.9% strikeout rate last year.
Despite boasting a league-worst 26.6% strikeout rate at the plate last season, the Twins still managed to have the seventh-best slugging percentage (.428) and weighted on-base average (wOBA; .327). Besides hoping that Byron Buxton can remain healthy -- he hasn't played in 100-plus games since 2017 -- Minnesota would love to see Royce Lewis build off a 2023 season where he tallied 15 home runs, 52 runs batted in, and a .548 slugging percentage in only 239 plate appearances.
Since the end of last campaign, the Twins have notably lost Jorge Polanco and Sonny Gray. In addition to recently landing Manuel Margot in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers to boost their outfield, Minnesota acquired right-handed pitcher Anthony DeSclafani from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for Polanco.
The path to a playoff berth seems fairly straightforward for the Twins due to playing in the weak AL Central, which is why Minnesota is listed as a -140 favorite by the AL Central odds. Minnesota has won the AL Central in three of the last five seasons, with the Cleveland Guardians, Kansas City Royals, Detroit Tigers, and Chicago White Sox being the other teams within the division.
With an elite pitching unit and a formidable group of bats, the Twins are looking to make some noise in 2024. The Twins haven't made it to the American League Championship Series since 2002, so they are hoping to end multiple streaks this year.
