Verdict

MOTIVER (10) was in the money two starts back at Geelong but couldn't back it up last time when sixth over 1 ¹5/16m at Warrnambool. Forget that and go off the Geelong performance, which is good enough to test these. Blinkers on could be significant. WIMMERA STAR (4) has been in the mix since scoring at Horsham on April 27, the latest offering a second over 1 ¼m at Mt Gambier. Unplaced at his only previous try at the trip but another big run is likely in this company. FONN POWER (3) was well fancied last start over 1 ¼m at Mildura when second, beaten 3.5 lengths. Strong winning chance. THREE REEL ROSES (12) improved sharply last time out to score by half a length over 1 ½m at Moe a month ago. Solid top-three prospects.

Horse Racing Basic Terms

Firm

A dry turf course, equal to a ‘fast’ dirt track.

Rabbit

Also known as a pacemaker; this is a horse with no expected chance of winning but is used to prompt a quick pace on the front end of the race to the benefit of a stablemate who is a closer.

Fractions

The times recorded during the race; with timing starting just past the gate or when the gates open, then parroted for the quarter, half, three-quarters etc. Used as an indication of ability and speed.
