MERLIN BEACH (5) ran a strong race over 1m at Hobart, beaten one length racing forward. Improved off his Maiden win at Launceston, and he will be right on the bunny from the inside gate. Presents on a 7-day backup and rates to bounce back. TAROONA (11) peaks and would be decent a winning chance if he found his best. Presents off a much better effort at Launceston and has the speed to manage the awkward gate. KNIGHTS REIGN (3) improved sharply second-up, leading and winning a Launceston Maiden. This is tougher, but he keeps the handy 7lbs claim and looks to have turned the corner. RIPPINGTON (7) disappointed at Launceston third-up but won his Maiden here by 5L fresh before placing at Launceston over 7f. Has a low gate and should get every chance to run out the longer journey. ALPINE JOY (8) went well last time and will be around the mark.
