Euro 2024 Betting Picks

England vs. Slovenia (3 p.m. ET)

Under 2.5 Goals (-110)

England (5th in FIFA's World Rankings) conclude their group stage matches with a final day clash against Slovenia (57th).

England are undefeated so far in Germany, with a win and a draw, but the performances have left the pre-tournament favorites feeling uncertain. They defeated Serbia (32nd) 1-0 in their opening match, but on expected goals -- per FBRef -- they won only 0.5-0.2. Not the confidence inspiring win many expected to see. In their second match against Denmark (21st), things got worse. The match finished 1-1, and 0.9-0.8 on xG.

Through two matches, England are generating just 0.69 xG/90, second-lowest in Euro 2024, ahead of only Scotland (0.32). Their 8.50 shots/90 is also second-worst. Thankfully for the Three Lions, their defense has been excellent. Their 0.50 xG allowed/90 leads all teams.

In the past, under manager Gareth Southgate, England has been criticized for playing too conservative. These results aren't exactly that -- England only had 53% possession against Serbia and 49% against Denmark. In the 2022 World Cup, they averaged 62.8% possession.

Of course, in major tournaments, the result is all that matters. A win over Slovenia guarantees England first place in Group C. If there was ever a game to take less risks in favor of guaranteeing all three points, this is it.

A legit concern here that Slovenia, who are eliminated with a loss, will press forward if they fall behind, leaving England numerous opportunities to exploit them at the back when they recover the ball. That is certainly a possibility, but the England side we have seen so far hasn't shown the ability to capitalize on such a situation.

England are deserving favorites in this match, but their struggles so far this tournament have me preferring under 2.5 goals.

Netherlands vs. Austria (12 p.m. ET)

Over 2.5 Goals (-106)

A draw would likely be enough for both of these sides to advance to the Round of 16, but both can potentially win the group with a victory. In qualifying, both the Netherlands (2.13) and Austria (2.0) ranked in the top 10 in goals/90. They tied for 14th in goals allowed/90 (0.88).

Austria's high-scoring attack has been in excellent form for over a year now. Since the start of qualifying in March of 2023, they have failed to score only once, and that was in their Euro 2024 opener against France -- the second-best team in the world. They scored three times in two matches against Belgium and put multiple goals past Slovakia, Turkey, and Serbia in friendlies. In the second match of Euro 2024, they scored 3 goals (from 2.1 xG) against Poland.

Their defense hasn't matched the success their attack has found. They have allowed a goal in five consecutive matches. In qualifying, they conceded four goals to Belgium across two matches.

The Netherlands' attack is capable of exploiting those struggles. They scored twice against Poland in their Euro opener and have been held scoreless just twice across their last 14 matches -- both times by France.

The Netherlands' defense has done a good job against lesser opposition but has struggled against better teams. They allowed six goals to France across two matches in qualifying, two to Germany in a friendly in March of 2023, and one to Poland in their Euro opener.

The strength of both these sides is their attack, and that has me favoring over 2.5 goals.

Prop Bets

Cody Gakpo to Score or Assist (+155): After scoring three goals in five games at the 2022 World Cup, Gakpo has picked up right where he left off. Against Poland, he recorded a goal, five shots (two on target), and created three chances. Those numbers declined against France -- one shot on goal and two chances created -- but he should have more opportunities against a weaker Austria defense.

Christian Eriksen to Score or Assist (+135): Through two matches, Eriksen has been by far the best player on the pitch for Denmark. He has combined for one goal, eight shots and 11 chances created. Serbia held England to just 0.5 xG but allowed 1.4 xG to a weaker Slovenia. In qualifying, the Three Lions kept just two clean sheets in eight matches -- vs. Lithuania (136th) and Montenegro (72nd).
