AL West Odds: The Mariners Are Sailing Away

In recent seasons, the American League West has been dominated by the Houston Astros. However, we appear to be at another changing of the guard.

The reigning World Series-champion Texas Rangers have displayed mixed results in 2024, but their talent and experience -- when healthy -- cannot be denied.

Historically, no franchise has won more division titles here than the Oakland Athletics (17), who presently find themselves dead last. From there, the Los Angeles Angels are just a notch above their NorCal rivals, struggling in their own way.

Still, no team has gone longer without winning the current group than the Seattle Mariners. Entering Tuesday (Jun. 11), Seattle leads the division by more than a handful of games. Additionally, they are now the odds-on favorite to win the AL West.

With less than 100 games left in the regular season for all ball clubs, let's dive into the divisional betting market.

Seattle Mariners (-200)

As alluded to, the Mariners have gone 22 seasons since the last time they were crowned kings of the AL West. In the current campaign, Seattle is eight games above .500 after nearly 70 contests played. With that in mind, numberFire has this group as the sixth-best team in MLB.

In line with recent years, the M's are built behind a prolific pitching staff. Right now, Seattle has produced a 3.60 skill-interactive ERA (SIERA), which is the third-lowest mark in the American League. Starters Logan Gilbert, Luis Castillo and Bryan Woo anchor a strong rotation.

Seattle will be a side to be reckoned with down the stretch, no doubt, but they could use an offensive boost. The Mariners' .670 team OPS ranks 24th in baseball (and 4th in the division).

Houston Astros (+300)

The Astros have won the AL West in each of the past three seasons. Further out, Houston has compiled six division titles in seven years, earning two Commissioner's Trophies en route. Simply, they've built a brand of baseball excellence in H-Town.

Aspects have not been "business as usual" for Houston. Presently, the 'Stros are seven games under .500. Regardless, they are listed with three-to-one odds at FanDuel Sportsbook to come back for the division crown.

According to numberFire's MLB power rankings, the Astros (0.53 nERD) are rated as the 10th-best team in MLB. Despite Houston's less-than-ideal record, they are still swinging the bats well. After 67 games played, the Astros are showing a .740 OPS, which is the top clip in the AL West.

Can veterans like Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez and Kyle Tucker power this team to a strong second half?

Texas Rangers (+470)

The world champs may be down, but they are not out. The Rangers are currently in second place of the division, sitting 5.5 games behind Seattle. Regardless of winning the franchise's first Fall Classic in 2023, Texas has not won the AL West since 2016.

The Rangers -- dealing with a myriad of injuries -- have experienced an offensive drop off this year. Their .691 team OPS is not the worst, but it lands 16th in the Majors. When looking at hard-contact rate, Texas (31.8%) is a bit better at fifth in MLB; that could pay dividends down the line being that Globe Life Field is a known hitter's park.

I won't rule out the club from Arlington improving down the stretch. Sluggers Corey Seager, Marcus Semien and Adolis Garcia make up a formidable core. However, Texas' bullpen has logged a bottom-five ERA (4.53) to this point. Perhaps that is one factor why the Rangers are labeled with +470 odds to win the AL West.

Longshots

With the way the 2024 season has gone, play these teams at your own risk.
