3 NHL Player Prop Bets to Target on Wednesday 1/24/24

Player props can be useful in a variety of ways -- from taking advantage of them straight up to measuring a player's potential to produce in daily fantasy hockey on FanDuel. Here, we're going to focus on the former.

Utilizing numberFire's projections as a guide, here are some NHL player props bets that look appealing via the NHL odds at FanDuel Sportsbook.

NHL Prop Bets

Nathan MacKinnon To Record 2+ Points (-132)

With a slate-high 3.85 implied goal total, the Colorado Avalanche should pour on the offense against the Washington Capitals.

The Capitals are on the second night of a back-to-back going into the altitude of Colorado, which can always give a team some slow legs.

On top of that, the Capitals have been struggling on defense over the last two weeks, allowing 2.70 Goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the ninth-worst in the league. Over that same time, the Avs' offense is scoring a whopping 3.50 Goals in the same situations, which is good for the third-best in the NHL.

This is led largely by Nathan MacKinnon, who has 19 NHL points and 51 shots on goal over his last 10 games. MacKinnon skates on the Avs' first power-play unit, which is hitting at the seventh-best (25.1%) rate this season, something that can always help his production.

With the second-most (77) total points in the NHL this season, MacKinnon is the definition of consistent and a great option tonight.

Charlie McAvoy Over 1.5 Shots on Goal (-130)

The Boston Bruins host the Carolina Hurricanes in a matchup of two elite teams.

Both teams are solid defensively and while we may not see a ton of goals with a 5.5 over/under, the teams will still look to generate offensive chances.

Charlie McAvoy is the defender on the Bruins' top defensive pairing and their top power-play unit, which has him playing a team-high 24:37 minutes a night. This has allowed him to hit over 1.5 shots on goal in eight of his last 10 games.

I'm under the assumption the Canes' defense will make an extra effort to minimize the opportunities for the Bruins' elite goal-scorer, David Pastrnak, who also leads the NHL with 233 shots on goal.

This should leave McAvoy with some extra opportunities to fire the puck at the net and generate some type of offensive pressure.

Jared McCann Over 2.5 Shots on Goal (-130)

The Seattle Kraken are in need of a win after a four-game losing streak and a matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks should enable that.

After a nine-game winning streak, the Kraken have hit a snag with this current four-game losing streak, but that should all change tonight in a matchup against one of the worst defensive teams in the league.

Over the last two weeks, the Blackhawks have allowed 70.01 Total Shot Attempts per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the second-worst in the league. Targeting them for shot props from the opposing team is a path to success, which leads me to Jared McCann.

Given the missing players from the Kraken's lineup, McCann should look to be the primary shot taker given his role on the first forward line and the first power-play unit. He has 16 shots on goal over his last five games and can continue that trend against a weak defensive team tonight.
