3 NHL Player Prop Bets to Target on Tuesday 12/19/23
Player props can be useful in a variety of ways -- from taking advantage of them straight up to measuring a player's potential to produce in daily fantasy baseball on FanDuel. Here, we're going to focus on the former.
Utilizing numberFire's projections as a guide, here are some NHL player props bets that look appealing via the NHL odds at FanDuel Sportsbook.
Please note that betting lines and numberFire's projections may change throughout the day after this article is published. Also, the weather may be an issue in some locations.
Tim Stutzle To Score a Goal (+155)
The Ottawa Senators have a 3.27 implied goal total against the Arizona Coyotes, where we should see plenty of scoring.
After firing their head coach yesterday, the Senators will look to turn over a new leaf and pick up a win. Their defense has always been the issue, which gets them into higher-scoring games, giving us a solid game environment to target.
Over the last two weeks, they are scoring 2.90 Goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the ninth-best in the league. That is a solid mark and lines up nicely against the Coyotes, who are due for some negative regression on defense.
The Coyotes are allowing 2.26 Goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations over the last two weeks, but that doesn't tell the entire story. In all situations, not just five-on-five, the Coyotes are allowing 3.00 Goals per 60 minutes, and see their Expected Goals Allowed (xGA) up at 3.63.
The surface level stats for the Coyotes look decent but they are actually struggling in a big way in recent games.
This leads me to Tim Stutzle, who is the center on the first forward line and the first power-play unit for the Senators. He comes in with 6 goals, 23 assists, and 80 shots on goal through 26 games this season. As usual, he's a high-volume shooter who hasn't scored in a while, with 15 shots over his last five games and only a single goal.
The Senators should have some extra jump with a new head coach and a top-line player should have plenty of chances to score tonight.
Nikita Kucherov Over 4.5 Shots on Goal (+100)
With 146 shots on goal in 31 games, Nikita Kucherov is always a good option for a shot prop.
Those 146 shots on goal are good for the second-most in the NHL this season and come out to 4.7 per game. Kucherov is the definition of a shot-first player and that makes him one of the most consistent options for shots on goal.
He will be up against the St. Louis Blues, who are allowing 63.37 Total Shot Attempts per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the seventh-worst in the league this season.
Kucherov has been over this 4.5 mark in seven of his last 10 games, and at even money with this matchup, this prop offers plenty of value tonight.
David Pastrnak Over 5.5 Shots on Goal (+104)
After getting ejected in his most recent game, David Pastrnak should come out firing tonight.
A penalty and a game misconduct led to Pastrnak getting tossed from the game and playing just 13 minutes the other night. Despite playing just 13 minutes, Pastrnak had 5 shots on goal, which shouldn't be a surprise for him, as he leads the NHL with a total of 147 shots on goal.
A shot-first mentality -- just like Kucherov above -- makes Pastrnak a clear option for shot props on a nightly basis. His matchup against the Minnesota Wild is rather middle-of-the-road in terms of metrics, but the Wild are on the second night of a back-to-back.
Combine that with the fact that Pastrnak is coming off a game where he got ejected, and I'll take the league leader in shots on goal to hit the over tonight.
