NBA Prop Bets
OG Anunoby Over 14.5 Points (-106)
The first game of an NBA on TNT doubleheader will provide us with a cross-borough matchup between the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets, and I think the newest Knick, OG Anunoby, is primed to get going.
Anunoby is averaging 15.1 points per game this season. With New York, he is averaging 14.9 points, and he has exceeded 14.5 points in four of his last five games.
The Nets have had a tough time limiting players like Anunoby. They surrender the third-most points and the sixth-most three-point makes (3PM) to small forwards.
Anunoby nets 42.5% of his points from behind the arc and is rocking with a solid 40.8% three-point percentage (3P%). Historically, he takes advantage of teams that allow him to shoot the three-ball.
In five games against teams that rank in the top five of 3PM allowed to small forwards, Anunoby is averaging 18.2 points and surpassed 14.5 points in all but one of those contests.
Anunoby is known for his shutdown defense, which has allowed him to convert steals into points, netting 22.7% of his points off the fastbreak. Only two players in the league (who average 20-plus minutes per game) score a higher percentage of their points off of fastbreaks. The Nets, meanwhile, are allowing the ninth-most fast break points to opponents.
The 5.0-point spread shows us this should be a competitive game, and if we take a look at Anunoby's game log, we can see that Tom Thibodeau has no issue keeping Anunoby on the court for 40-plus minutes when need be.
Plus, the Knicks are coming off of two days rest, and in eight contests this season that followed a pair of off days for Anunoby, he is averaging 17.8 points.
Jonas Valanciunas Over 21.5 Pts + Reb (+100)
Jonas Valanciunas is averaging 23.5 combined points and rebounds (PR) this season and has eclipsed 21.5 PR in eight of his last 11 games.
If you've watched a New Orleans Pelicans game this season, you know that Valanciunas can pad his stats with efficiency, so I feel confident in targeting the over in tonight's contest against the Utah Jazz.
On paper, the Jazz look like a friendly matchup for Valanciunas. They surrender the seventh-most points and offensive rebounds to centers per 36 minutes.
Utah also has a weak interior defense, ceding the 12th-most paint points per game. Valanciunas scores 60.0% of his points in the paint. At times, JV will be granted a matchup against Utah's starting center, John Collins. Collins suffers with the worst defensive rating on Utah and the eighth-worst defensive rating in the entire NBA (of eligible players have suited up for at least 35 games and average at least 20.0 minutes).
Further, the Jazz allow the eighth-most putback opportunities and Valanciunas is scoring the eighth-most putback points in the league. This is a great avenue in which JV could turn offensive rebounds into points.
Valanciunas has gone up against the Jazz on three occasions this season. He recorded 27.0 PR in one of these matchups but mustered just 15.0 PR and 10.0 PR in the other two. However, these poor performances should not deter us.
On the season, Valanciunas touts a 56.7% field-goal percentage (FG%). In that game where he grabbed 27.0 PR, he ended with a 50.0% FG%. But in the two games where he put up low PR numbers, he ended with a 33.3% FG% and 30.0% FG%. And we can't cite Utah's defense; they allow the 10th-best FG% to centers.
Simply put, JV had a pair of unlucky shooting nights against this team, but I think Utah's poor defensive stats prove that he is more than capable of exceeding 21.5 PR tonight. Plus, the market could be citing his previous performances against Utah with this line. In reality, this is a solid matchup for JV, so if I can get over 21.5 PR at even money when he is averaging 23.5 PR, I'll take it.
Austin Reaves Over 21.5 Pts + Reb (-102)
The big injury news of the day is that LeBron James (ankle) will not suit up for tonight's showdown between the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers.
While just about every Laker, statistically speaking, benefits from LeBron's absence, I'm most interested in targeting Austin Reaves to have a good night.
Reaves is averaging 19.2 PR this season, but in four games without LeBron, he is netting 23.0 PR per contest.
When sharing the court with LeBron, Reaves accumulates 21.0 PR per 36 minutes, but when LeBron is on the bench, he nets 27.4 PR per 36 minutes. For reference, Reaves is playing 32.4 minutes per night in January. If he plays 32.4 minutes tonight, that means he would be projected to record 24.66 PR sans LeBron.
The Clippers surrender the 11th-most points to shooting guards. Over their last five games, the Clips have been giving up the eighth-most 3PM in the league, and Reaves nets 50.0% of his points from downtown.
The Lakers have a modest 112.5 implied team total in this one, but Anthony Davis and D'Angelo Russell can only take on so much of the scoring duties. Even if Davis and Russell manage to combine for 60 points, there is still a projected 52.5 points left for the taking, and the Lakers do not have a convincing bench unit.
It's worth noting that FanDuel Sportsbook is offering a 30% Profit Boost on a Same Game Parlay or Same Game Parlay+ for any of the NBA games tonight. If you're interested in the aforementioned props or want to make a SGP for the NBA on TNT games (Knicks-Nets and Lakers-Clippers), I'd consider taking advantage of this promo.
