3 MLB Player Prop Bets to Target on Monday 8/21/23
Player props can be useful in a variety of ways -- from taking advantage of them straight up to measuring a player's potential to produce in daily fantasy baseball on FanDuel. Here, we're going to focus on the former.
Utilizing numberFire's projections as a guide, here are some MLB player props bets that look appealing.
Please note that betting lines and numberFire's game projections may change throughout the day after this article is published. Also, the weather may be an issue in some locations.
Ronald Acuna To Hit a Home Run (+370)
The Atlanta Braves have a slate-high 6.06 implied run total and could exceed that in a blink of an eye.
When it comes to home run props, we're always looking for solid hitters in a good matchup, but the odds also shouldn't be ignored. We often see Ronald Acuna's home run odds around +280 to +320, and tonight, he's up at +370.
I want to jump on the odds tonight at an elevated number, along with plenty of stats to back it.
Acuna comes in with a 149 wRC+, .397 wOBA, .230 ISO, 52.1% hard-contact rate, 31.5% hard-contact rate, and 21.7% HR/FB ratio versus left-handed pitchers. He's simply elite across the board and there's not much more to say.
Acuna will be up against David Peterson, who allows a .459 SLG, 4.01 xFIP, 1.02 HR/9, and 18.8% HR/FB versus right-handed hitters this season. This is nothing Acuna or the Braves need to worry about and should be en route to plenty of runs tonight.
Luis Castillo Over 6.5 Strikeouts (-106)
Luis Castillo has been one of the best pitchers in the league this season and has a favorable matchup tonight.
Castillo is rocking a 27.3% strikeout rate, 15.1% swinging-strike rate, and 29.2% called-plus-swinging-strike (CSW) rate. This has allowed Castillo to exceed this 6.5 mark in four of his last six starts.
In those four outings, Castillo posted a 33% strikeout rate or higher, showing his top-end talent that puts him among the best in the league.
Tonight, he will be up against the Chicago White Sox, who come in with a 23.4% strikeout rate versus right-handed pitchers, which is the 10th worst in the league. With recent form and the matchup, Castillo is in a great spot to hit the over tonight.
Nathaniel Lowe To Record 2+ Total Bases (-110)
A strong 5.21 implied run total for the Texas Rangers is a good indication they will be getting runners on base.
If a team is going to be scoring runs, they are going to have runners on base. That means there are player props we want to target and that starts with Nathaniel Lowe.
Lowe has super strong numbers versus righties this season with a 144 wRC+, .379 wOBA, .202 ISO, .357 BABIP, and 36.8% hard-contact rate. You have to love everything you see there for Lowe, especially versus a rookie pitcher.
That pitcher would be Slade Cecconi, who has only 10.1 innings pitched at the MLB level this season. There's nothing we can draw from this sample size that would be of any value.
Simply put, I'm siding with the experienced hitter with great splits over the rookie pitcher. Lowe has great odds and the Rangers' offense is expected to put up plenty of runs tonight.
