MLB DFS Value Plays

Spencer Schwellenbach, P, Braves ($7,200)

The Atlanta Braves are expected to call up Spencer Schwellenbach from Double-A to make his MLB debut on Wednesday versus the Washington Nationals. While it's a massive difference in competition from Double-A and the majors, Schwellenbach produced an elite 1.63 xFIP, 38.6% strikeout rate, and 17.8% swinging-strike rate in two starts at the Double-A level in 2024.

Even though the Nationals are around league-average in strikeout rate with the 17th-highest strikeout rate (21.8%) versus righties, they have the 9th-lowest wOBA (.303), 11th-lowest wRC+ (96), and 9th-lowest ISO (.138) in that split. Additionally, Washington is sporting the 12th-highest strikeout rate (23.0%), 3rd-lowest wOBA (.285), 3rd-lowest wRC+ (84), and lowest ISO (.118) since the start of May.

There's a chance Schwellenbach is put on a pitch count in his first career start in the big leagues. At the same time, Schwellenbach has lofty strikeout upside and allows us to fit in high-salary bats into our lineups.

Gavin Sheets, 1B/OF, White Sox ($2,900)

Stacking the Chicago White Sox isn't for the faint of heart, so we'll stick to mentioning Gavin Sheets as a viable one-off salary-saver on Wednesday's main slate. Sheets is posting a .367 wOBA, .182 ISO, and 138 wRC+ with just a 14.1% strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this year, and he'll take on Alek Manoah in today's matchup.

In terms of his recent form, Sheets has tallied nine-plus FanDuel points in four of his last six contests. Winds are also expected to blow from left to right in Wednesday's clash between the White Sox and Toronto Blue Jays.

Also, Manoah is getting hit hard by left-handed bats. He is permitting a .391 wOBA, .580 SLG, and 3.55 HR/9 against left-handed hitters, compared to a .181 wOBA, .088 SLG, and 0.00 HR/9 versus right-handed hitters through his first four starts in 2024.

Despite Chicago's low implied run total, Sheets is someone who can do damage against Manoah and Toronto's bullpen.

Gabriel Arias, 2B/3B/SS/OF, Guardians ($2,900)

There are two left-handed starters taking the mound in the Coors game on Wednesday, with Logan Allen pitching for the Cleveland Guardians and Ty Blach getting the nod for the Colorado Rockies. Considering that Blach is giving up a .420 wOBA, .573 SLG, 1.96 WHIP, and 1.65 HR/9 to right-handed hitters, we'll want to focus on the right-handed bats in Cleveland's lineup.

Among the players on the Guardians who carry a salary of $3,000 or less in Wednesday's contests, Gabriel Arias is one who is an intriguing option to target. Besides boasting valuable positional flexibility on FanDuel, Arias is registering a .366 wOBA, .469 SLG, and 140 wRC+ in his first 33 plate appearances against southpaws this season.

Despite Arias holding a 30.3% strikeout rate versus lefties, Blach is in the first percentile in whiff rate (11.5%) and first percentile in strikeout rate (10.5%). Arias has also recorded an RBI in two of his last three appearances, and Colorado's bullpen is producing the worst SIERA (4.56) and WHIP (1.62).
