3 Daily Fantasy Baseball Stacks for Tuesday 9/5/23

Stacking is an integral part of daily fantasy baseball. Correlation drives upside, giving your lineups a slate-winning ceiling when your stacks explode.

This piece will do the digging and the dirty work each day to determine which stacks are worth rostering on FanDuel's main slate. While we want upside, we also need to factor in game theory, especially in a sport as random as baseball.

The MLB DFS heat map at numberFire is a quick way to get a feel for the overall slate and which offenses are in a good spot. You can also check out numberFire's daily fantasy baseball projections to identify the slate's best bats.

Let's look at the top stacks for today's main slate.

Chicago Cubs

Implied Total: 5.87 | Opposing Pitcher: Ryan Walker

The Chicago Cubs have been one of baseball's sneaky offenses this season and that should keep up against the San Francisco Giants.

The Giants will be going with Ryan Walker as their opener but it's likely to be Sean Manaea in a bulk scenario afterward, and that's where much of the value for the Cubs comes through.

Manaea was removed from the rotation and moved to the bullpen by the Giants after what was a difficult start to the year for the southpaw. His numbers have improved since moving to the bullpen, but he's still sporting a 4.96 ERA. In his last 9 2/3 innings, he's allowed six runs which is on par with the ERA. Chicago has a team wOBA of .320 against left-handers, so this should be a fine day to stack them against Manaea and company with the top implied total on the day only helping that (5.87).

Cody Bellinger ($3,900) has been outstanding this season, especially against lefties. In 152 plate appearances, Bellinger has a .341 batting average, .415 wOBA, .982 OPS, and .246 ISO -- making this matchup an ideal one for him. He's been the best hitter for the Cubs so any stack should be led off with him in his resurgent 2023.

The powerful bat of Patrick Wisdom ($2,700) tracks well here as the Cubbies first baseman has 21 home runs in 272 plate appearances, showing he can go deep at any time. There are the struggles that come with Wisdom (37.5% strikeout rate), but with the value he presents in what could be a loud offensive day for the Cubs, he's worthy of consideration.

Finish out a Cubs stack with any of Nico Hoerner ($3,500), Dansby Swanson ($3,100), Ian Happ ($3,100), Seiya Suzuki ($2,800), and Christopher Morel ($2,800).

Arizona Diamondbacks

Implied Total: 5.15 | Opposing Pitcher: Kyle Freeland

The Arizona Diamondbacks have taken a tumble comparably to where they were in the first half of the season but still do pack a punch on offense, especially against the Colorado Rockies and their starter Kyle Freeland.

The left-hander has been one of baseball's worst as he has a brutal 5.18 ERA to go along with the 5.18 SIERA that shows he's performing exactly as expected -- which isn't good. While he's never been a big strikeout pitcher in his career, the lefty is still down to a career-low in strikeout rate at 14.5%. And to make matters worse for him (and better for the Diamondbacks), his flyball rate is sitting at a career-high 40.6%.

Roll out the Diamondbacks where you can.

Lourdes Gurriel ($3,000) projects as the best hitter on the day for Arizona per numberFire, as the model has him set for 14.0 FanDuel points on today's slate. Gurriel has been playing well in the most recent stretch as he has three extra-base hits in his last two games -- including a home run.

His struggles in June and July really brought his numbers down but he's found form since the start of August as he has seven home runs. In his first few games in September, he's up to a blistering .479 wOBA, so here's top hoping that can carry forward into this one.

The Diamondbacks have a number of options offensively, as finishing out a stack should be easy with this matchup looking so great. All of Corbin Carroll ($4,000), Christian Walker ($3,600), Ketel Marte ($3,400), Tommy Pham ($2,800), and Evan Longoria ($2,100) are projected for more than 12 points each by numberFire, so any pairing of them in DFS lineups should do the trick.

Baltimore Orioles

Implied Total: 4.86 | Opposing Pitcher: Reid Detmers

The final team worth rolling with today stack-wise are the Baltimore Orioles.

Baltimore has been an offensive force over their last three games as they finished with 7, 8, and 6 runs in each. They'll get their shot to keep the good times going when they take on the Los Angeles Angels starter Reid Detmers.

Detmers has struggled for a lot of the season as he's got a 5.01 ERA to show for it. In three of his last five starts, he's allowed three or more runs including back-to-back outings of allowing seven earned runs. His underlying numbers of a 4.20 SIERA and 4.41 paint a better look at how he's been this season, but those numbers aren't anything to be nervous about when picking the Orioles for DFS lineups.

Anthony Santander ($3,800) has been the ideal play for the Orioles as his spot at the top of the lineup prepares him for a big spot each and every game. Santander has 26 home runs and a .346 wOBA on the year. September has not started off as well as August did for him but if he can ride the .384 wOBA he had beginning with this great matchup, it should work out. numberFire's model has him projected for 12.1 FanDuel points, the most of any player on Baltimore.

Adley Rutschman ($3,100) destroys lefty pitchers -- start him up in any Orioles stack. He's got a .393 wOBA and .901 OPS against southpaws compared to a .324 wOBA and .747 OPS against righties. This is the right time to get him in the lineup.

Ryan Mountcastle ($3,300), Gunnar Henderson ($3,300) Austin Hays ($2,800), and Aaron Hicks ($2,400) all make sense for filling out the rest of an Orioles stack.
