Updated:

Sports fans looking for something different to keep them entertained this summer are in luck. The 2022 World Games 2022 have officially kicked off in Birmingham, Alabama, featuring a wide variety of sports and over 100 countries sending athletes to participate.

For anyone not familiar with this Olympics-style event, here's everything you need to know about the 2022 World Games.

What Are the World Games?

The World Games are an international, multi-sport competition. The Games showcase sports, or disciplines within a sport, that were not featured at the Olympics. Events include more well-known sports like lacrosse and bowling, as well as more unique sports such as tug of war and korfball.

This is the 11th World Games in the competition's history. The first was held in the United States in 1981, making 2022 the second time they've been the host country. The United States has won the overall medal count twice (1981 and 1997).

This World Games was originally scheduled to be held in 2021, after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but was pushed to 2022 once the Olympics were rescheduled for 2021.

There are 3,600 athletes, over 30 sports and over 100 countries scheduled to participate in this year's competition.

World Games Schedule of Events

The World Games are an 11-day event. The 2022 competition had its opening ceremony on July 7, and the closing ceremony will be held the night of July 17.

Friday, July 8 will be the first day of sports events taking place. Bowling, archery (compound target) and floorball are among the sports getting underway to open the 2022 World Games. Athletes will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals, just like the Olympics.
