WNBA Predictions & Odds Today for Sunday May 21 (Look for a Big Day from the Underdogs)

Updated:

The WNBA season rolls on with an intriguing three-game slate on Sunday. There are a couple of close matchups and one obvious mismatch, but all three games present some interesting angles for betting today. Here's a look at the slate.

Washington Mystics vs Connecticut Sun Odds & Predictions

Venue: Mohegan Sun Arena — Uncasville, CT
Broadcast: N/A
Moneyline: WAS: (+100) | CON: (-122)
Spread: WAS: +1.5 (-110) | CON: -1.5 (-110)
Over/Under: 185.5 — Over (-110) | Under (-110)

Prediction

This afternoon's Mystics vs. Suns matchup is projected to be the closes on Sunday's WNBA slate, and for good reason. Neither one is a favorite to win the championship in what oddsmakers have as a two-team race between the Aces and Liberty, but they both promise to be very competitive. The Mystics blew out that very same Liberty team in their season-opener, and the Sun are right behind the Mystics in FanDuel's championship odds.

This line seems to be giving a lot of weight to home-court advantage though. We have a Mystics team that projects for a stronger season than the Sun overall and that is also coming off a much more impressive opening day win. Don't overthink this one, and I wouldn't even call it a true "upset" if the Msytics win.

Score prediction: Mystics 82 - Sun 77
Best bet: Mystics moneyline (+100)

Indiana Fever vs New York Liberty Odds & Predictions

Odds & Game Info

Start time: 2:00 p.m. ET
Venue: Barclays Center — Brooklyn, NY
Broadcast: Twitter
Moneyline: IND: (+1200) | NY: (-3500)
Spread: IND: +16.5 (-105) | NY: -16.5 (-115)
Over/Under: 160.5 — Over (-110) | Under (-110)

Prediction

Speaking of the Liberty, don't get silly and start worrying about them after just one loss. With Jonquel Jones, Breanna Stewart, Courtney Vandersloot and Sabrina Ionescu leading the way I'm not about to pick against the Liberty straight up for any opponent except maybe the Aces.

The question here is really about that 16.5-point spread, not about who will win. The Fever are coming off a sizable 9-point loss to the Sun, and there's a reason they rank dead-last in the WNBA Championship odds for this season. 16.5 points is a big spread, but it's not big enough.

Score prediction: Liberty 89 - Fever 70
Best bet: Liberty -16.5 (-115)

Chicago Sky vs Phoenix Mercury Odds & Predictions

Odds & Game Info

Start time: 4:00 p.m. ET
Venue: Footprint Center — Phoenix, AZ
Broadcast: ESPN, ESPN+
Moneyline: CHI: (+142) | PHO: (-176)
Spread: CHI: +3.5 (-110) | PHO: -3.5 (-110)
Over/Under: 161.5 — Over (-110) | Under (-110)

Prediction

Back to a close matchup after the previous game's likely slaughter, the Sky and Mercury had starkly different openings to the season. A win over a pretty unimpressive Lynx Team shouldn't get you too excited about Chicago, but it's certainly a more encouraging result than the absurd 23-point blowout loss to the Sparks that the Mercury season.

It wasn't just an inability to stop one player that foiled the Mercury either — they allowed five different players to score 10-plus points in that one, which highlights some much deeper issues than simply a poor gameplan or struggles in one specific area. Look for Kahleah Copper to shine as both a scorer and distributor in a close win to move to 2-0.

Score prediction: Sky 81 - Mercury 80
Best bet: Sky moneyline (+142)
