Willson Contreras Reveals Amazing Yadier Molina Story at Spring Training

Updated:

The St. Louis Cardinals made a savvy move this offseason to replace future Hall of Famer Yadier Molina with the best available free-agent catcher on the market after his retirement. St. Louis brought in three-time All-Star catcher Willson Contreras from the Chicago Cubs.

Now, as the Cardinals prepare to officially report for Spring Training ahead of the 2023 season, Contreras revealed an amazing story regarding the Hall of Fame talent he'll be replacing.

Contreras opened up about the first time he ever tried on a Cardinals jersey. It went back a few months to the beginning of his free agency, just shortly after the 2022 season ended. Apparently, Molina, who Contreras describes as his "hero" sent him a gift.

The gift was one of Molina's Cardinals' jerseys, with the No. 4 and Molina on the back. According to team insider Derrick Goold, Contreras proceeded to put on the jersey and asked his wife "How does it look?"

It must have looked great, because just a few short months later, Contreras was the next starting catcher for one of the best franchises in baseball. Even the MLB catcher brotherhood spans the most bitter of rivalries.
