Who is the Home Team for Super Bowl 2023? How Home-Field Advantage is Determined for Chiefs vs Eagles

Updated:

There's plenty of things football fans are curious about ahead of Super Bowl 57 between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles. One question that some will have ahead of kickoff: Who is the home team, Philadelphia or Kansas City?

Since the Super Bowl is played at a neutral location, the answer usually isn't clear. We're here to help break it down.

Who is the Home Team in the Super Bowl This Year?

In 2023, the home team for the team Super Bowl is the Philadelphia Eagles, while the Kansas City Chiefs are the away team. This is due to the home team alternating conferences every year, regardless of any other factors. Since the AFC-based the Cincinnati Bengals were the home team in the previous Super Bowl against the Los Angeles Rams, now the NFC-based Eagles draw home team distinction.

Home/away labels are mostly a formality since the Super Bowl is played on a neutral field anyways and fans from both teams will be in attendance. However, the home and away teams each get their own special perks in-game.

As the home team, the Eagles will get to pick what uniforms they wear in Super Bowl 57. This could provide a mental advantage if there's a jersey they've performed well in, or there's a jersey the Chiefs have done poorly in.

Meanwhile, as the away team, Kansas City will be given the choice of heads or tails at the opening coin flip. This has a much more direct impact on the game, as the winner of the toss will be able to decide if they want to defer and receive the ball to start the second half, which is oftentimes seen as an advantage.

Home and Away Team Super Bowl Record

Now that leaves us wondering: is it still home-field advantage in the Super Bowl when you don't have the benefit of playing in front of your home-town crowd? So far NFL history says no — in fact, home teams have really struggled. The all-time record for home teams in Super Bowls is 23-33, which of course means away teams have stellar 33-23 record, winning 59% of the time.
