Who is the Eagles' Backup Quarterback and Emergency QB for Super Bowl?

Updated:

This year's Super Bowl features a matchup between two star quarterbacks once again as Jalen Hurts leads the Philadelphia Eagles against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Hopefully nothing happens to these two incredible talents, but both are nursing injuries heading into the big game.

With that in mind, here's what you need to about the Eagles' backup QB situation for Super Bowl 57.

Who is the Eagles' Backup Quarterback for the Super Bowl?

Philadelphia has two other quarterbacks on its roster besides Jalen Hurts. Gardner Minshew is Hurts' primary backup and made two starts when Hurts was sidelined with a shoulder injury for Weeks 16-17 earlier this season.

Minshew is regarded as one of the best backups in the league given his experience. He was the Jacksonville Jaguars' starter for 20 games between the 2019 and 2020 seasons, which included an impressive 3,271 passing yards, 21 touchdowns and just 6 interceptions during the 2019 campaign.

Minshew's made nine appearances (four starts) for Philadelphia since being traded to the team in the 2021 offseason. He's posted 1,102 yards, 8 total TDs (7 passing, 1 rushing) and 4 INTs in those games.

Ian Book, meanwhile, serves as Eagles' third-string QB. However, he hasn't made an appearance for Philly yet and is often inactive on game days since teams can only have two quarterbacks active at a time.

Book entered the league as a fourth-round draft pick by the New Orleans Saints in 2021. His lone NFL appearance to this point was a start during that season. He recorded 135 yards, 0 TDs and 2 INTs in that contest.

There are two other players Philadelphia could turn to if Hurts and Minshew went down while Book was inactive. First off is tight end Tyree Jackson, who played quarterback in college at Buffalo. He threw for 6,999 yards, 49 TDs and 24 INTs across 32 games before making the move to TE in the pros.

Then there's practice squad wide receiver Greg Ward. He was a three-year starter at the University of Houston before transitioning to WR in the NFL. Ward has logged 40 appearances for Philadelphia since 2019 as a wideout, although he was demoted to the practice squad after the 2021 campaign. Given the Eagles don't have a QB on their PS, that seems to show confidence in Ward as a last-case option.
