Who Are the Super Bowl 57 Officials? Full Ref Crew for 2023

Updated:

Super Bowl Week is finally upon us, meaning football fans won't have to wait long to see who is crowned champion this year. Before SB 57 kicks off, though, there are a few major questions viewers are curious about.

One that many want to know is: Who is refereeing the 2023 Super Bowl? Here's what you need to know about the SB 57 officiating crew.

Who is the Head Referee for Super Bowl 57?

Veteran official Carl Cheffers will be the head referee of the Super Bowl in 2023. He wears No. 51 and has served as an NFL official since the 2000 season. Cheffers has been the referee of the Super Bowl twice before, leading his crew in Super Bowl LI and Super Bowl LV.

Super Bowl LV, of course, featured the Kansas City Chiefs, who lost and set a record for most penalties in a first half with Cheffers officiating. Cheffers has a notable history with the Chiefs that's presented problems for Kansas City before.

Cheffers is known as one of the most flag-happy referees in the game, so fans may be in for a ton of whistles from him and his crew on Super Bowl Sunday. KC and Philly both ranked in the top 10 for fewest team penalties this season at 4.9 and 5.2 per game, respectively, so they're typically pretty disciplined.

Cheffers will be joined by seven other officials to ref the Super Bowl: Roy Ellison (umpire), Jerod Phillips (down judge), Jeff Bergman (line judge), John Jenkins (field judge), Eugene Hall (side judge), Dino Paganelli (back judge) and Mark Butterworth (replay official).

This is the third SB appearance each for Ellison, Bergman, Hall and Paganelli, while it is the first for Phillips, Jenkins and Butterworth.
