Vince Lombardi Trophy History: Super Bowl Trophy Name, Worth and Value

Updated:

Super Bowl Week is here, meaning football fans will soon get to watch two talented teams battle it out in the season's final game. By the end of Super Bowl Sunday, only one squad will remain, and they'll get the honor of hoisting the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Here's everything you need to know about this famous hardware before it's claimed once again.

What is the Super Bowl Trophy Called?

The Super Bowl trophy is officially named the Vince Lombardi Trophy, though it's commonly referred to as the Lombardi Trophy. This award is given to the NFL team that wins the Super Bowl at the end of every season

The trophy is named after NFL head coaching legend Vince Lombardi, who won the first two Super Bowls in league history with the Green Bay Packers. After Lombardi's passing in 1970, the NFL decided to honor his legacy by naming the championship trophy after him. The Lombardi Trophy was then awarded for the first time in 1971 following Super Bowl V.

What Company Makes the Lombardi Trophy?

Former NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle recruited famous luxury jeweler Tiffany & Co. in 1966 to begin work on a championship trophy. Tiffany has remained the crafter of the Lombardi Trophy ever since. The award is made annually at the company's Cumberland, Rhode Island manufacturing facility.

The Lombardi Trophy is 22 inches tall and weighs 7 pounds. A new trophy is made every year and the winning team keeps the award, which contrasts with the NHL, where the Stanley Cup is passed from champion to champion after each season.

How Much is the Super Bowl Trophy Worth?

Tiffany & Co. crafts the Lombardi Trophy out of sterling silver every year. The entire process takes over four months and costs the company $50,000 to make. Meanwhile, the actual value of the trophy and its silver is only $10,000.

Given the labor required to make the actual trophy, players on the winning team do not each receive their own Lombardi award. However, they all get mini replicas of the big trophy, which are worth about $1,500 each.
