VIDEO: Remembering When the Rams Set an NFL Record on One of the Most Bizarre Punt Returns of All Time

Long kick returns are a pretty common occurrence in the NFL, especially in the days when touchbacks only went to the 20-yard line. But long punt returns are much more rare, since returners generally won't even catch the ball if it's near the goal line, instead letting it go into the end zone for a touchback.

In fact, there is only one punt return in NFL history that went for over 100 yards: Robert Bailey's 103-yard touchdown in a game between the Rams and the New Orleans Saints.

Talk about a bizarre return, not to mention one that couldn't even happen in today's NFL. Now, when a punt touches the ground in the end zone it is blown dead immediately. Back when this play happened, though, the kicking team still needed to touch the ball for it to be blown dead.

The Saints' coverage team all seemed to have thought someone else touched it, or maybe that it went out of the end zone when it bounced near the back.

Rams returner Robert Bailey made an incredible heads-up play when he noticed the Saints quitting on the play, sneaking around a few of them before picking the ball up on the run and blowing past everyone for the touchdown.

The commentators really summed up what must have been going through the Saints' minds when they saw the referee signalling touchdown: "Wait a minute, what's going on out here?"
