It seems like forever ago that outfielder Aristides Aquino bursted into the majors with a torrent home run streak. His game these days is focused much more on his ability to throw the baseball. Aquino made his tenth assist of the season for the Cincinnati Reds last night and even the Philadelphia Phillies broadcast crew was in awe.

Aristides Aquino Throw

The play started with Phillies catcher JT Realmuto hitting a ball that missed going over the fence by a few feet in the seventh inning. It bounced off the wall to Aquino in right field, instead. That was when he threw a bullet to home plate to catch Rhys Hoskins trying to score all the way from first base.

Philly broadcasters Tom McCarthy and John Kruk certainly didn't see it coming. When Hoskins was tagged out, both men let out a "WOW" and Kruk followed it up with a "good lord." They even named the 99 mph one-hopper that saved a run for the Reds the Hyundai Defensive Play of the Game.

It was the fourth-fastest outfield assist since MLB started measuring through Statcast in 2015. Keep in mind the three that rank in front of it all came from Aquino this season, too. His 10 assists is tied for the NL lead with San Diego's Jurickson Profar and Milwaukee's Hunter Renfroe.

Aquino's defensive abilities have been able to make up for his struggles at the plate in 2022. The 28-year-old is slashing only .178/.221/.295 across 154 plate appearances with 15 runs scored, 4 home runs, 15 RBI and 2 stolen bases. Cincinnati remains far out of playoff contention with a 48-74 record.
