Updated Panthers QB Depth Chart After Baker Mayfield Trade

Updated Panthers QB Depth Chart After Baker Mayfield Trade

Updated:

After months of rumors, the Carolina Panthers finally pulled off a trade for Baker Mayfield on Wednesday. The former No. 1 overall pick gives Carolina's quarterback situation a huge boost and could immediately assume QB1 duties.

Here's how the Panthers' QB depth chart stacks up following Mayfield's arrival.

Panthers Quarterback Depth Chart

1. Baker Mayfield

Mayfield becomes the instant favorite to start for the Panthers in Week 1 following his trade to Carolina. The 2020 version of himself was one of the top quarterbacks in the league, throwing for 3,563 yards and 26 touchdowns with just 8 interceptions. He took a major step back in 2021, though a slew of injuries played a major role in Mayfield's disappointing showing. He should be motivated to ball out for his new team and secure a lucrative long-term contract after the final year of his rookie deal.

2. Sam Darnold

Carolina's Sam Darnold experiment may already be over. Last offseason's notable trade acquisition failed to impress in his first year, throwing more INTs (13) than TDs (9) along with 2,527 yards. Darnold's play was a major reason this team ranked fourth-worst in passing yards per game in 2021, so it'll take a massive turnaround for the former top-three pick to win his starting job back.

3. Matt Corral

The Panthers drafted Ole Miss standout Matt Corral in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He finished seventh in Heisman voting as a redshirt junior, recording 3,349 yards, 20 TDs and just 5 INTs; he also added another 614 yards and 11 TDs on the ground. That dual-threat potential made him worth taking a flier on, though his rookie year will likely be spent learning from the veterans around him.

4. P.J. Walker

Former XFL standout P.J. Walker is currently the longest-tenured player in the QB room after joining Carolina in 2020. He's played in nine games for the Panthers over the past two years, recording a combined 730 yards, 2 TDs and a whopping 8 INTs. If the three other QBs remains on the roster, Walker could be a training camp casualty.
