Tyrann Mathieu Gives Intriguing Update on Saints Jersey Number

Updated:

The arrival of veteran safety Tyrann Mathieu is one of several reasons New Orleans Saints fans are excited for the 2022 season. Outside of being an All-Pro talent, this is also a homecoming for the New Orleans native who also starred at LSU.

As the Super Bowl winner prepares for training camp with his new team, Mathieu has made an intriguing revelation about his Saints jersey number.

Tyrann Mathieu Saints Jersey Number

Mathieu said on a recent Instagram Live his number for the 2022 campaign is still undecided. Though he's been spotted wearing his usual No. 32 at offseason practices, he revealed he's actually looking to wear No. 5 to represent the Fifth Ward.

Changing from No. 32 would be quite the departure for Mathieu, who's worn the number for his entire NFL career. However, he previously stated 32 is already one way to pay homage to his roots, so taking No. 5 would just be a more explicit way to double down on that idea.

The NFL's recent changes to jersey number rules open up the opportunity for Mathieu to take on a single-digit choice. It'd be no surprise to see a No. 5 jersey with Mathieu's name on the back become a best-seller given the meaning behind it.

One factor that complicates Mathieu's potential number swap is Kwon Alexander's future in New Orleans. The linebacker is currently an unsigned free agent, though there's a chance he reunites with the Saints after wearing No. 5 for the team last season.

Hopefully Mathieu is able to get the number he wants and work something out if Alexander ends up returning.
