Tyler Steen Scouting Report

Steen committed to Vanderbilt out of high school and originally appeared as a defensive lineman as a freshman. He moved to the right tackle position in 2019, where he then started all 12 games for the Commodores. Steen was the moved to the left tackle spot for all nine games of the 2020 season.

The Florida native found his groove in the 2021 season as he allowed 5 sacks and 0 QB hits across 12 games. His efforts caught the attention of Alabama, which is where he transferred to prior to his final year and was named a second-team All-SEC player for giving up 2 sacks and 2 QB hits in 13 games.

Highlighted strengths of Steen's game focus on his reactionary speed. He succeeds at getting depth on opposing pass rushers with a quick jump from the snap and countering their moves with his fast hands. Steen has also been praised for his ability to seal off backside defenders during rushing plays.

Steen is far from a perfect prospect, though, as his technique needs polishing. His aggressiveness from the snap can cause him to open his gate too soon and his eagerness to make blocks can cause him to lunge at defenders. Nevertheless, Steen's growth in college is not something to be take lightly.

Tyler Steen NFL Draft Prediction

Steen's showed a ton of improvement in just one season at Alabama, which will make it interesting to see what he can do under the guidance of an NFL coaching staff. He has the skillset to be a reliable starter down the road if he can figure out how to combat the power most NFL pass-rushers possess.

Steen is a prospect any team in need of offensive line depth should be taking a look at, including the 49ers. After all, San Francisco lost both Mike McGlinchey and Daniel Brunskill in free agency during the offseason. Finding a swing tackle capable of taking on a bigger role if necessary is crucial here.

It would benefit the 49ers to add someone with versatility in that case and Steen fits that mold. He could learn under one of the best tackles in the game (Trent Williams) and take over once he retires. The 49ers don't have a pick until the third round, so this will be a wait and see game on Friday night.

Prediction: San Francisco 49ers (Round 3, 99, 101 or 102 overall)
