Twins Insider Names Two Offseason Free Agent Targets

Updated:

The Minnesota Twins are fighting for a playoff spot despite ranking 19th in the league in terms of starting rotation ERA (4.20). It's a position that will clearly need to be addressed in the upcoming offseason. Twins insider Brandon Warne recently named two names to target in free agency.

Warne focused on a couple of veterans in Nathan Eovaldi and Noah Syndergaard. Keep in mind the only starting pitchers locked in for Minnesota in 2023 are Kenta Maeda and Randy Dobnak. Dylan Bundy and Sonny Gray have club options, while Chris Archer has a mutual option in his contract.

One year after making his first All-Star Game appearance, Eovaldi is in the midst of another solid campaign. He currently sits at 5-3 on the year with a 4.23 ERA and 1.23 WHIP across 17 starts (93.2 innings). The idea of signing an extension with the Boston Red Sox is dwindling with each passing day.

Meanwhile, Syndergaard is looking to make the most out of a midseason trade to the Philadelphia Phillies. The seventh-year pro owns a 3.96 ERA on the season to go along with a 1.28 WHIP (6-8 record). Syndergaard has also logged 70 strikeouts compared to 24 walks in 91.0 innings pitched.

It's not like the Twins don't have the money to pay what each starting pitcher will be looking for, either. Minnesota entered the 2022 season with the 14th-lowest payroll in baseball. That ranking jumps to 11th-highest in 2023, but that's not taking into account any roster cuts coming in the offseason.

For now, the Twins have odds set at +5000 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
