The Tennessee Titans were dealt a pleasant surprise at the 2022 NFL Draft when former Liberty quarterback Malik Willis fell to them in the third round. The selection stirred up a bit of a controversy with veteran gunslinger Ryan Tannehill, but things seem much smoother as July approaches.

Any fans hoping to see Willis play a snap during the 2022 NFL season might be left disappointed. Titans insider Turron Davenport (via ESPN) is reported that there's a 75% chance that the rookie signal-caller will ride the bench for the entire campaign.

Titans Roster Rumors

Unsurprisingly, Tannehill is the main reason why Willis likely won't see any playing time. The 33-year-old veteran is still capable of throwing for over 3,500 yards and at least 20 touchdowns each season. Throw in the fact that he's started in each of his team's last 43 regular-season games and it's easy to see why Tannehill likely won't lose his job.

Yes, the Titans' 2021 campaign was a disappointment, but the franchise is still expected to be competitive this fall and beyond. Considering that Willis was seen as a bit of a project when he was drafted, it makes sense for both sides to let him sit and develop for at least a year.

Willis broke out after transferring from Auburn to Liberty in 2020. He started 23 games over two seasons with the Flames, racking up 5,107 passing yards and 47 touchdowns to 18 interceptions. As long as his development progresses as planned, he could be the Titans' QB of the future.

Fortunately, fans might not have to wait too long to see Willis in action. Davenport is predicting that the Titans will give Willis a look in Week 15 of the 2023 NFL season "to see what they have" in the Atlanta, GA native before deciding if it's time to move on from Tannehill.
