After firing general manager Al Avila, the Detroit Tigers will be looking to go in a whole new direction with their next hire. Team President Chris Iltich said in a press conference last week that he wants a forward-thinking executive and insider Cody Stavenhagen has some uncommon names in mind.

Stavenhagen did mention that the team could swing big by interviewing current GMs of other MLB teams that fit the mold such as Jason McLeod (Arizona Diamondbacks) or Matt Arnold (Milwaukee Brewers). The names he categorized as under-the-radar options were much more intriguing, though.

Josh Stein of the San Diego Padres was thrown into the mix. This is his ninth season serving as the team's assistant GM and he has been praised for his impact in player evaluation and development. Stein was a candidate for San Diego's open GM position back in 2014 before AJ Preller was hired.

Another assistant GM that Stavenhagen noted was Alex Slater of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Slater was promoted from Director of Baseball Development & Scouting to his current position in November of 2021. His ability to spot talent where no one else is looking has been on full display over the years.

The final under-the-radar option Stavenhagen listed was Jason Parks. Parks has been a pro scouting director for the Diamondbacks since 2017 and worked with in the Chicago Cubs front office prior to that. His background as a baseball writer gives him a unique vantage point when compared to others.

This is not a position that is expected to be filled anytime soon, though. The Tigers are prepared to "cast a wide net" and will be conducting as many interviews as they can. With AJ Hinch seemingly entrenched as the manager, look for his philosophies and strategy to be taken into account here.

The Tigers have odds set at +500000 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
