Saez rode Tapit Trice for all three of the horse's wins in 2023 including the March 11 Tampa Bay Derby followed by the Blue Grass Stakes. Luis Saez's Kentucky Derby experience has been an emotional roller coaster. Saez already had an unofficial taste of success in the Run for the Roses, guiding Maximum Security first across the finish line in 2019. But Derby glory was short-lived; Maximum Security drifted out and caused interference on the far turn, prompting a disqualification to 17th place.
