Shocking Report Emerges on Jimmy Garoppolo's 49ers Future

The past couple of months have been a whirlwind for Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers. The veteran quarterback went from nearly being traded this offseason to rejoining the team and even taking over a starter after Trey Lance's ankle injury.

Garoppolo has been solid under center once again for the 7-4 Niners, helping boost his stock before he hits free agency in 2023. However, a surprising report has now emerged on Garoppolo's potential future in San Fran.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the 49ers and Jimmy G are both "open" to him returning next season "under the right circumstances." Rapoport guessed it could be a "short-term deal" that would bring Garoppolo back, allowing Lance to learn a little more from the veteran before taking on the full-time starting role.

This is certainly an intriguing scenario to watch. Garoppolo clearly knows how to succeed in Kyle Shanahan's system, and he presents this team its best chance to compete right now. Lance, meanwhile, is hopefully the player that will bring plenty of long-term success.

Garoppolo returning as starter would obviously prevent Lance from taking the next step in his career. The two reportedly have a great relationship, though, so perhaps the latter would be on board with this move.

How far Garoppolo takes the 49ers this season could also play a significant factor in how aggressive the team is to re-sign him. He's gone 6-3 in nine starts so far, helping San Francisco take first place in the NFC West. The Niners are currently No. 4 (+650) in FanDuel Sportsbook's Super Bowl odds.
