Sean Payton’s New Broncos Salary Revealed

Updated:

The Denver Broncos finally found their new head coach on Tuesday by trading for Sean Payton from the New Orleans Saints.

The cost to acquire the former Super Bowl champion was steep, however, in terms of both assets and dollars. Not only did the Broncos give up two draft picks to land Payton, but they'll also be paying him handsomely.

Denver is expected to pay Payton at least $17-20 million, if not more. That's the going rate for a top head coach these days, and Payton has a ton of leverage with his new team after being one of the most coveted HCs this offseason.

Payton briefly retired last year after serving as the New Orleans Saints' head coach for 15 seasons. Based on his new salary, however, it's easy to see why he was so quick to return to coaching.

The 59-year-old coaching legend will earn every penny of that money and then some if he's able to turn around a struggling Broncos squad that went 5-12 and finished last in the AFC West last year. The Saints had a .631 winning percentage under Payton during the regular season, so Denver is expecting similar results from him with a roster that's built to win now after last year's trade for Russell Wilson.

Payton wasn't cheap, but if he can get the Broncos back on track it will be money well spent.
