Santa Anita Horse Racing Picks for Sunday 3/19/23

Updated:

The Santa Anita Classic Meet continues Sunday at "The Great Race Place" with 11 races and post time at 3:30 p.m. ET / 12:30 p.m. local.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes, and monitor the weather and track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races after adjusting for track, distances, and conditions).

According to numberFire horse racing projections, these are some of the best bets to make at FanDuel Racing today.

1. The Chosen Vron and Indian Peak, Race 3

Race 3 is the $100,000 Sensational Star Stakes for Cal-bred older horses at 6 1/2 furlongs on the downhill turf course. The numberFire data projects the heavy favorite The Chosen Vron (3/5) to win ahead of Indian Peak (4/1) and Fast Buck (3/1).

The Chosen Vron has a 5-race winning streak in stakes for California-breds since early September. He returns to a turf sprint race for the first time since winning in October.

2. Kingdom Hear and Mas Rapito, Race 5

FanDuel Racing Odds: 5/1 and 7/2

Race 5 is an Allowance sprint at 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf. Going 5 furlongs on the grass is about the same as going 4 - 4 1⁄2 on the main track. So find a horse that has shown top speed in a final quarter mile of a race and he'll be there at the finish.

The numberFire believes it's Mas Rapito (7/2) with leading jockey Frankie Dettori riding. He finished a close second to the favorite going 6 1/2 furlongs the end of Jan. on this course after leading into the stretch.

Mark's Hip (6/1) and Kingdom Heart (5/1) are the top challengers. Mark's Hip has the meets top jockey Juan Hernandez riding from the rail. Kingdom Heart gets first time Lasix in his third start and ran a stakes race here two weeks ago. A strong morning work tab in Feb. shows his speed.

3. Bajan Bashert and Boss Lady, Race 9

FanDuel Racing Odds: 5/2 and 6/1

Race 9 is a Maiden Special Weight for state-bred 3-year-old fillies sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf. Isabel Ludlow (2/1) showed that burst to the finish a month ago in her second start. She came flying from off the pace to finish 2nd and ahead of the favorite. She'll have to draw into the 12 horse field as she's first alternate, but a win choice if she does.

Isabel Ludlow is a top challenger by numberFire's data, along with projected winner Bajan Bashert (5/2), who has finished 2nd and 3rd in her two starts over this turf course including as the 2/5 heavy favorite last race. Boss Lady (6/1) makes here debut and tries to break out front from the rail.

Game odds refresh periodically and are subject to change.
