Sammy Watkins Injury Update is Great Sign for Potential Week 7 Return

Updated:

Five weeks of the 2022 NFL season have gone by and quarterback Aaron Rodger is still adjusting to the new receiving core he has in front of him. The good news is that he could get one of his favorite targets back from injury in Week 7. Sammy Watkins' status continues to trend in the right direction.

Sammy Watkins Injury Update

Packers insider Matt Schneidmann reports that Watkins was on the field running routes and catching passes from WR coach Jason Vrable on Sunday morning. It's a great sign for a receiver Rodgers connected well with early on. Watkins logged 111 yards on 6 receptions across the first two games.

It was a hamstring injury that caused Watkins to be sidelined in the first place. A nagging issue like that can be tough for receivers to overcome given their tendency to have to change direction on a dime during routes. Playing it safe with Watkins' recovery was the best route for the team to take.

Green Bay's Week 6 matchup against the New York Jets will be the fourth and final game Watkins has to miss as he remains on the injured reserve. He can be activated and rejoin the team for practice as soon as Tuesday. The Packers will then have three weeks to put Watkins back on the 53-man roster.

As for Sunday, Rodgers will look to keep building chemistry with the likes of Allen Lazard, Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson. Veteran Randall Cobb is notably coming off his best game of the season, too. The 32-year-old hauled in 7 of his 13 targets for 99 yards against the New York Giants.
