Samaje Perine Reveals Why He Turned Down Bengals in Free Agency

Updated:

The Cincinnati Bengals backfield has a ton of question marks heading into the offseason. First, what will happen with starter Joe Mixon and his off-the-field legal troubles? And who will replace his former backup, Samaje Perine, who departed for the Denver Broncos in free agency?

Perine has spoken about his Cincinnati departure for the first time since joining Denver, and it might surprise you to find out that the Bengals offered him a similar contract to stay.

Perine explained that he decided to leave the Bengals because the Broncos' situation is better for him. In Cincinnati. Mixon is still presumably the starter and a very talented back in his prime, which has greatly limited Perine's playing time.

With the Bengals, much of Perine's workload was in the passing game with sporadic carries here and there. With the Broncos, however, he has the chance at the lead-back role, especially to start the season. With Javonate Williams recovering from a torn ACL, he might not be ready for the start of the year. Even if he is, he won't be available for a full workload or lead-back duties.

Denver presents a great opportunity for Perine to show he can be a lead back and command a backfield, both in the rushing and passing game. Sometimes, it's about more than just the money.
