Royals to Blame for Latest Salvador Perez Injury

Updated:

Kansas City Royals star catcher Salvador Perez is the true heart and soul of this team. He's played nearly every day since returning from the IL with a thumb issue in late May, and continues to enjoy his best month of the season in June (.254/.312/.563).

Unfortunately, the thumb injury appears to remain an issue as Perez left the Royals game early on Tuesday night after re-aggravating the ailment. Perez is due for further testing on Wednesday but a harsh lesson is learned from Tuesday night; the Royals only have themselves to blame for Perez' injury issues.

This is not the first time that Perez' thumb has been a topic of conversation since his first game back from the IL on May 28. The seven-time All-Star even admitted to the finger bothering him, but his desire to play through the pain.

Already playing the most-enduring position in the sport, the veteran catcher continues to put his body on the line both behind the dish and at the plate. It's quite simple, the Royals need to stop risking their five-time Gold Glover at the risk of causing significant damage.

Perez' postgame comments prove what a tough player he is, indicating he would have fought to stay in the game had he been playing DH instead of catcher. It's clear Perez won't shut himself down, but the Royals need to save the veteran catcher from further damage. Especially considering one player won't turn around their 12.0-game deficit in the AL Central standings.
