Robert Woods Fantasy Outlook & Injury Update 2022 (Still Elite After an ACL Tear and Change of Scenery?)

Robert Woods Fantasy Outlook & Injury Update 2022 (Still Elite After an ACL Tear and Change of Scenery?)

Updated:

Veteran wide receiver Robert Woods was on pace for his third 1,000-yard season in four years before tearing his ACL in a freak accident during practice in November. A member of the Los Angeles Rams at the time, he's since been traded to the Tennessee Titans where he hopes to pick up from where he left off before his injury.

The Titans have been one of the better AFC teams in recent years and Woods has a chance to be their No. 1 WR following A.J. Brown's departure this offseason. However, fantasy managers are wondering if he can still be productive coming off such a major injury.

Robert Woods Fantasy Football Outlook

Before disaster struck, Woods was enjoying another solid year with the Rams. He amassed 45 catches for 556 yards and four touchdowns, also turning eight rushing attempts into another 46 yards with a ground score.

Woods ranked as the WR12 in PPR fantasy formats before his injury, showcasing just how good he can be. Had he continued playing, he was on pace to end the year with 1,137 total yards from scrimmage, along with around nine or 10 touchdowns.

With Brown and Julio Jones no longer with the Titans, the duo's combined 153 targets last year are up for grabs. While rookie WR Treylon Burks should see a fair share of them, Woods will be relied upon to handle the lion's share due to his nine years of NFL experience.

Thanks to Derrick Henry's presence in the backfield, opposing defenses must respect Tennessee's run game. As long as that trend continues, Woods and the rest of the Titans' WRs will occasionally be given more leeway, which should result in a promising fantasy campaign for the vet if he can stay healthy.

Robert Woods Injury Update

Any player coming off a significant injury is bound to leave concerns for fantasy managers. The good news here is that Woods' recovery has been progressing nicely, resulting in his getting rid of his knee brace just last week.

Although Woods isn't a full participant at training camp just yet, the Titans have been (slowly) increasing his workload. He's formed chemistry with quarterback Ryan Tannehill during some non-contact drills in July and was finally able to participate in seven-on-seven sessions this week.

Assuming everything continues at this pace, Woods has made it clear that he intends to play in the Titans' Week 1 opener against the New York Giants. Barring any setbacks, there's no reason to be worried about his playing status.

Robert Woods Projections

Projections from the NFL odds on FanDuel Sportsbook are quite low on Woods. One example is that he's only available at +10000 odds (T-No. 44) to lead the league in receiving yards.

FanDuel also has set his projected receiving yards total at 750.5 with -112 odds on both the over and under. That's a total that Woods surpassed in each season from 2017 to 2020 and he was well on pace to finish with the over last year.

Assuming Woods averages 12.4 yards per reception as he did in 2021, it'd take him about 61 receptions to finish with the over. As long as he remains one of Tannehill's preferred weapons, hitting at least 751 receiving yards shouldn't be an issue.

Is Robert Woods a Good Fantasy Football Pick?

Woods has been one of the more underrated fantasy WRs in recent years. Had he stayed healthy last year and continued at his pace, he'd be receiving a lot more praise this season. Having said that, you can't really go wrong with the Titans' No. 1 WR — assuming that you think his ACL won't act up.

For now, Woods ranks as the WR41 when it comes to The Duel''s PPR player rankings. The 30-year-old veteran pass-catcher also has an average draft position of 102.2 on Fantasy Pros, meaning that he likely won't be on the board beyond the middle of Round 9 in 12-team leagues.
