Richmond Raceway will once again play host to NASCAR festivities this weekend as the Federated Auto Parts 400 prepares to get underway. This race is just one of three remaining before the Cup Series Playoffs kick off in September.

Where Is Richmond Raceway?

Richmond Raceway is located in Richmond, Virginia. For fans not familiar with the area, that's about two hours south of Washington, D.C.

Richmond Raceway originally opened back in 1946 as a half-mile dirt track, and was known as the Atlantic Rural Exposition Fairgrounds set within the Virginia State Fairgrounds.

It earned it's first NASCAR event back in 1953 before the original track was paved in 1968.

Richmond Raceway underwent its biggest changes in 1988. The original track was officially closed and re-designed into its present-day D-shape configuration and 0.75-mile length, still under the previous name of Strawberry Hill Raceway. The Virginia State Fairgrounds was bought in 1999 before a final name-change to Richmond Raceway.

The current construction of the Raceway holds a capacity of 51,000 seats in addition to 680 seats in the TORQUE Club.

Richmond Raceway Past Winners

Martin Truex Jr. won the Federated Auto Parts 400 in 2021. This race had always been previously held in September, and as part of the Cup Series Playoffs from 2018-2021. The race was shifted for an August date in 2022, and is once again part of the regular season. The annual race has undergone several name sponsors, notably the Chevy Rock and Roll 400. Richard Petty owns the all-time NASCAR career high with seven wins at Richmond Raceway. Bobby Allison ranks second with five wins, while Darrell Waltrip and Rusty Wallace both own four.

Petty's wins came in 1967, 1968, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1974.
