Red Sox Get Major Injury Update on Trevor Story

Updated:

The Boston Red Sox received their share of bad news this offseason, much of which involved their top free-agent targets deciding to sign with other teams. The biggest blow besides the shocking departure of Xander Bogaerts, however, was the unexpected news that Trevor Story had undergone offseason elbow surgery.

The operation, which is essentially a modified version of Tommy John surgery, was completed in January and is expected to sideline Story for a considerable amount of time. The 30-year-old infielder provided an update on his recovery timeline at Spring Training on Wednesday.

Story confirmed that he will miss at least the first half of the season, which is his best-case scenario. He also conceded that he may need to miss the entire season, which would be his worst-case scenario.

The two-time All-Star is optimistic and believes the former situation is more likely, which would put him back on the field sometime in July around the All-Star Break. In that case, he could provide the Red Sox a significant boost in the second half and potentially help them make the playoffs.

Story missed significant time last year as well, appearing in just 94 games for Boston after signing a six-year, $140 million deal in the offseason. His elbow issues were known at the time and greatly diminished his arm strength, so the hope is that the surgery will help restore some of that power and enable him to return to shortstop after moving to second base in 2022.

In the meantime, former center fielder Kike Hernandez will hold down the fort at short until Story returns, with newcomer Adalberto Mondesi potentially seeing some time there as well.
