Red Sox Get Bad News With Michael Wacha Injury Update

Updated:

The Boston Red Sox thought pitcher Michael Wacha would need just a few days rest after being scratched from his Monday start with a "heavy arm." It turns out that was hopeful thinking. Wacha is expected to land on the injured list after his bullpen session on Wednesday did not go to plan.

Michael Wacha Injury Update

Wacha threw at Fenway Park prior to Boston's game against the Tampa Bay Rays with a goal of bouncing back and starting on Friday. Instead, the pain in his arm was as apparent as ever. The new goal is to return after the minimum 15 days, which would be shortly after the MLB All-Star break.

This is certainly not the news Red Sox fans were hoping to hear. Wacha is set to join a crowded injured list that already includes the likes of Nathan Eovaldi, Rich Hill and Garrett Whitlock. Of course, Chris Sale and James Paxton have yet to make their 2022 debuts due to substantial injuries as well.

It's an even bigger blow considering how well Wacha has been pitching in 2022. The 31-year-old owns a 6-1 record and has posted a 2.69 ERA across 13 starts. He has also struck out 50 batters in 70.1 innings pitched and threw his second career complete game shutout back on June 6.

Right-hander Connor Seabold was called up to start against the New York Yankees on Friday night. The 26-year-old is 0-1 on the year and has allowed 8 earned runs over 8.2 innings pitched (2 starts). Boston is a +130 underdog in that matchup, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
