Trades involve a lot of moving parts for professional athletes. Not only do they have to change teams and cities, but sometimes they also have to switch jersey numbers, too.
That's the case for new Baltimore Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith, who was traded from the Chicago Bears ahead of Tuesday's NFL trade deadline.
Roquan Smith Jersey
Prior to being dealt, Smith wore No. 58 with the Bears. Given that nose tackle Michael Pierce currently wears 58 for the Ravens, Smith is changing his number to 18 with Baltimore.
While 18 is an unusual number for a defensive player, 68, 78, 88 and 98 were already taken. At least Smith gets to keep one digit the same with 18.
This will be Smith's first time wearing a different number besides 58 in the NFL, as he'd had the same number since debuting with Chicago in 2018. Time will tell if the new number affects his performance at all.
Smith will try to help his new team beat the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football this week. The Ravens are currently favored by 2.5 points on FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL odds.
