Premier League Relegation: Which EPL Teams Have Been Relegated for 2022 & 2023 Relegation Odds

Updated:

While American pro sports leagues are constantly fighting to minimize "tanking" (losing on purpose for a better draft pick), there's no such worry in the English Premier League. The relegation system means the fight to avoid finishing at the bottom of the EPL table can be just as intense as the fight to finish at the top.

With relegation playing such a big role every year, The Duel is here to get fans caught up on some key issues: Who has been relegated for the 2022-23 season? Who is most likely to face relegation at the end of the year? What are the relegation rules, and how are ties broken?

Let's get into it.

What is Relegation in the Premier League?

The relegation (and related promotion) system is what keeps the English Premier League competition so fierce, even at lower levels of the table. Every year the three teams that finish at the bottom of the EPL table are relegated (demoted) to the EFL Championship — the second-tier league. They are replaced by the top three EFL teams: the top two teams in the EFL table plus the winner of a four-team playoff at the end of the season.

A spot in the EPL can be worth tens of millions of dollars to these franchises, so relegations are not something any team takes lightly.

This year Burnley, Watford and Norwich City have been relegated to the EFL Championship, and it wasn't an especially tight race.

Watford and Norwich City's relegations were basically foregone conclusions long before the season ended. With 23 and 22 points, respectively, neither team came any closer than 15 points of avoiding relegation. Things were a lot closer for Burnley, whose 35 points put them just 3 behind Leeds United, 4 behind Everton and 5 behind Southampton. They could have avoided relegation with a win in the season's final matchweek, but a loss to Newcastle United sealed their fate.

The three teams replacing them with promotions this season are Fulham, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest. Fulham (90 points) and Bournemouth (88 points) cruised to the top of the EFL table, and Nottingham Forest won the playoff to earn its promotion.

EPL Relegation Tie Breaker

Of course, the point system in the standings leaves room for ties for relegation spots. If points are tied, the first tiebreaker is teams' goal differentials (goals scored minus goals allowed). If that is also tied, then goals for is the third tiebreaker.

In the rare occasion that all three of those numbers are identical, the tiebreak is then determined by head-to-head points between those teams from their matchups during the season. After that it's head-to-head away goals scored.

And in the 1-in-a-million shot that those five categories can't separate two squads, a play-off match is to be played, with the being relegated. The chances we see this are slim, but that sure would make for an intense match to watch.
