Preakness 2023 Participants: Who's In & Who's Out Following Kentucky Derby Results

The 2023 Kentucky Derby concluded on Saturday and horse racing fans are already looking forward to the next big race. The 2023 Preakness Stakes is set to take place Saturday, May 20, at Pimlico Race Course in Maryland. Coverage will be provided by NBC as the race is slated to start at 1 p.m. ET.

Here's everything you need to know about who's in and who's out at the 2023 Preakness Stakes.

Is Mage Racing in the 2023 Preakness?

Mage turned on the jets down the stretch at Churchill Downs Racetrack to make up ground on Two Phil's and eventually pass him to win the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby. The inexperienced colt is widely expected to race in the Preakness in what is the second leg of the American Triple Crown.

2023 Preakness Stakes Contenders List

Mage won't be the only notable horse racing to wear a blanket of Black-eyed Susans in Baltimore. However, the field will certainly look a bit different than that of the one at the Kentucky Derby. Here's a look at the expected contenders for the Preakness Stakes.

1. Mage

Mage has checked off the first box of the American Triple Crown and has a chance to become the first horse since Jusifty (2018) to accomplish the feat.

2. Forte

Forte was favored to win the Kentucky Derby on the morning of the event before he was scratched due to a bruised foot. He enters on a five-race winning streak.

3. Two Phil's

Two Phil's came within a few feet of winning the Kentucky Derby after taking the lead about a mile in. A positive post position would certainly help his desire for victory.

4. Perform

Perform is one of the more experienced horses of this group, having competed in seven races. He is coming off back-to-back victories, too.

5. First Mission

First Mission has won two of the three races he has participated in and is trained by the great Brad Cox. He is a rising name heading toward the race.

6. National Treasure

National Treasure has yet to finish worse than fourth in any of his five races and is trained under a legend in the sport of horse racing in Bob Baffert.

7. Blazing Sevens

Trainer Chad Brown pulled Blazing Sevens out of the Kentucky Derby, which is a similar strategy to the one he employed with 2022 Preakness winner Early Voting.

8. Instant Coffee

Instant Coffee hasn't raced since March, but he's a horse guided by a renowned trainer in Brad Cox. That cannot be taken lightly at the Preakness.

9. Chase the Chaos

Chase the Chaos has earned a Preakness entry thanks to a win in the El Camino Real Derby in February. His recent eighth-place finish was a disappointment, though.

10. Red Route One

Red Route One has earned a Preakness entry thanks to a win in the Bath House Row Stakes in late April. He is trained by Steven Asmussen.
